Verdasco: Year to remember

Player Profile

Another player with a game suited to the hard surface is Spanish southpaw Fernando Verdasco.

The 25-year-old has had a year to remember after reaching a career-high ranking of seventh in April, and he will be keen to go well in New York.

Perhaps surprisingly, Verdasco has never reached the quarter-finals of the US Open, however that feat will be well within his expectations this time out.

The Spaniard enjoyed a fine start on the hard stuff when he beat Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on his way to the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

Perhaps best on clay, Verdasco is generally regarded as being comfortable on all surfaces and following his year of improvement he'll be looking to venture further than ever in New York this time around.

Confidence will be high having won the warm-up event at New Haven.
