Player Profile

Belgian Clijsters returns to SW19 for the first time in four years in a bid to claim an elusive Wimbledon title.

The two-time US Open champion is still searching for a Grand Slam crown away from Flushing Meadows, but injury has hampered her preparations for SW19.

An ankle complaint kept her away from Roland Garros, but she proved her fitness by playing at Eastbourne recently.

A canny grasscourt operator, Clijsters knows her way around Wimbledon, although she has never been beyond the semi-final stages at the All England Club.

Clijsters was world number four when she announced her retirement in May 2007 and seemed lost to the sport forever when she married American basketball player Brian Lynch and then gave birth to their first child, Jada, in February 2008.

However, she made a sensational return last year, winning her second Grand Slam singles title at Flushing Meadows when, in only her third tournament back, she beat both Williams sisters before defeating Caroline Wozniacki in the final.

That enabled her to become the first wild card to win a women's Grand Slam singles title and the first mother to become a champion since Evonne Goolagong triumphed at Wimbledon in 1980.

Clijsters missed the French Open with a foot injury but is determined to make an eighth appearance at the All England Club in a bid to emulate Goolagong 30 years on.
