Player Profile

The great British hope will look to go one better than in 2008 when he lost in the final at Flushing Meadows.

And after good preparation he looks ready to at least go close.

Murray won the recent Masters 1000 event in Toronto, defeating Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer back-to-back to become only the fourth player to beat both men at the same tournament.

Notably Murray managed to raise his aggression in Canada, causing Federer plenty of problems, while the defensive side of his game has never been an issue.

The hardcourts are the Scot's terrain - he has long since described the US Open as his best chance of Grand Slam glory and results suggest Murray is right.

He also made the final in Los Angeles and reached the quarter-finals in Cincinnati, excusably losing to Mardy Fish after a tough two weeks of tennis in searing heat.

Some would suggest the conditions could be a problem in New York but Murray showed in 2008 that he had the ability to win best-of-five matches there.

He has a great chance of ending the long British wait for major glory.
