Schiavone has been something of a late bloomer on the women's tour and the twilight of her career is proving to be some ride.

At the age of 29, the Italian captured her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2010 French Open - a huge upset at the time.

A claycourt expert whose variety of shot has bamboozled many a player on the red stuff, Schiavone is best known Down Under for her epic tussle with Svetlana Kuznetsova at last year's tournament.

The pair played for four hours and 44 minutes in round four before Schiavone prevailed 16-14 in the final set having saved no fewer than six match points. It was the longest Grand Slam match in the Open era.

Now 31, Schiavone made the semi-finals in Brisbane in the run-up to this event and also posted an impressive win over Sam Stosur in Sydney.

Those results suggest another good showing at Melbourne Park is in the offing.
