It would be a major surprise to even Almagro himself if he were to be challenging at the business end of proceedings in Melbourne.



His best results have all come on slower clay - indeed all 13 of his ATP career titles have all come on the surface.



Three of those came last season (Nice, Buenos Aires and Costa Do Sauipe), a campaign which lifted the Spaniard to a career-high ninth in the world at one stage.



Consolidating his place in the top 10 will now be the aim for the Spaniard, who has made it to the fourth round at Melbourne on each of his last two visits.



He ran into eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the last 16 in 2011 and unless the draw opens up, it will be hard to see 'Nico' producing a personal-best run Down Under.
