The pin-up girl of women's tennis is not only the world's highest-paid female athlete but a three-time grand slam champion, although the last of her three major titles now came four years ago in Australia.

The former world number one climbed to number four in the rankings at the end of 2011 which was her first top-five finish to the year since 2007.

The 24-year-old has returned to form in the past year, claiming WTA titles in Rome and Cincinnati, as well as reaching the Wimbledon final at All England Club in July.

Sharapova has been more recently troubled by a niggling ankle problem which could dampen her hopes of winning Down Under - she was forced to withdraw from the Brisbane warm-up event and is set to come into the event cold.

However, the Russian fully expects to be ready for the year's first Grand Slam and is among the favourites to become queen of Melbourne Park once again.

She is one of the most powerful, athletic and mentally strong players on tour but is often let down by her hit-and-miss serve.
