Following his French Open triumph last season, the Spanish star now has 10 Grand Slam titles to his name.

Yet only one of those has come at Melbourne Park - in 2009 when Nadal won a classic five-set battle with Roger Federer in a thrilling final.

Injury has restricted his title bids in each of the last two years and is threatening to do so again.

Nadal recently revealed a shoulder problem had restricted his ability to practise during an off-season of just three-and-a-half weeks and when he returned to action at the Abu Dhabi exhibition event he was duly humbled by David Ferrer.

The world number two, who admitted to feeling a lack of "passion" for the sport at the end of 2011, has already said he will take February off which suggests he may not have a great deal in the tank in Melbourne.

Yet it would be foolish to write Nadal's chances off. With his run-all-day attitude, Nadal has proved himself to be the fittest player on the tour - when injury-free - and he deserves respect whenever he plays.
