The American was one of the surprise packages of the season, finishing inside the top eight to earn himself a place at the ATP World Tour Finals.

For a man who turned 30 at the end of the year, it was an impressive achievement.

Fish's serve has been a big weapon during his career but that facet and many others has improved significantly over the past couple of years.

Last season he won the title in Atlanta and finished runner-up in the Masters 1000 event in Canada - results which show his propensity to perform on hardcourts.

Having said that, Australia has not been a happy hunting ground in the past - only once in nine visits to Melbourne Park has Fish progressed to the second week.

Fish is good friends with fellow US star Andy Roddick, the man he replaced as American number one last season. The pair lived together for a period during their college days.
