After a reaching a career-high ranking of seventh in the world last summer, Monfils starts 2012 with work to do to regain a top-10 ranking.

While being a top-16 player is no failure, in some pundits' eyes Monfils has not made the most of his natural talent.

After being ranked as the best junior in the world, many tipped the Frenchman to go on to dominate the senior ranks too, but that has failed to materialise.

Capable of beating the best on his day, Monfils is prone to get down on himself when things go badly, while injury problems have also often dogged him during his career to date.

Being capable of such highs and lows make him a watchable player, while the fact he wears his heart on his sleeve also makes him popular with fans.

The former world junior number one, who won the boys' title in Melbourne in 2004, certainly should be rated as a potential dark horse Down Under.

However, he has only reached the second week once in six previous visits.
