In 2005 the promising Belarusian won the Australian Open junior title but soon found the step up to the senior ranks a much tougher proposition.

However, Azarenka has made major improvements to her game in the last couple of years and is currently ranked number three in the world.

She reached the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park back in 2010 and then achieved the same feat at Roland Garros a year later before reaching her first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon in the same year.

The right-hander eventually lost out to eventual champion Petra Kvitova on the grass, but is clearly a player on the up and will be a seen as a major threat by her rivals in 2012.

She has eight WTA career titles to her name with three of those victories coming in 2011, but many observers feel she lacks the physical strength that could earn her a major title.

Azarenka, who resides in Scottsdale, Arizona is known more for her grunting than her performances after being warned by officials for reaching 95 decibels. Her average screams lasted 1.5 seconds during Wimbledon.

The bookmakers see Azarenka among the favourites and if she continues her improvement, then that elusive Grand Slam title is surely just around the corner.
