Andy Roddick has pulled out of the United States' Davis Cup quarter-final clash with Croatia later this week.

The 26-year-old has cited a right hip flexor injury suffered in his gripping Wimbledon final defeat at the hands of Roger Federer as the reason for withdrawing.

Roddick appeared to be slightly injured after slipping in the eighth game of the fourth set, but played on for a further hour and a half before losing 16-14 in the final set.

He has been a committed member of the Davis Cup team for several years, having played in 18 consecutive matches for the United States, helping them win the title in 2007.

"Andy has been a stalwart for this team the past nine years, and his dedication to Davis Cup and his team-mates is unquestioned," US captain Patrick McEnroe said.

"Andy had a great run at Wimbledon. He battled for more than four hours yesterday and fought hard to reach the final. Understandably, his body is not up for the rigours of Davis Cup in such a short turnaround."

Roddick will be replaced by close friend Mardy Fish.

Meanwhile, Wimbledon quarter-finalist Juan Carlos Ferrero has been called into the Spain squad for their clash with Germany in Marbella.

The former French Open champion will replace David Ferrer, who has withdrawn with an injury to his left leg.

Ferrero will join Fernando Verdasco, Nicolas Almagro, Tommy Robredo and Feliciano Lopez with Rafael Nadal still on the sidelines.
