Wozniacki: chasing a maiden grand slam title in New York
This felt like playing in a hurricane.
Caroline Wozniacki
Quotes of the week
Top seed Caroline Wozniacki mastered tricky conditions to book her place in the US Open semi-finals with a 6-2 7-5 win over Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova.
With swirling winds gusting at over 30mph, Wozniacki claimed the opening set courtesy of three breaks of her unseeded opponent's serve.
The second set was a more competitive affair as Cibulkova, the diminutive world number 45 who had knocked out former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the previous round, retrieved an early break to get herself back in contention.
But Wozniacki fashioned the crucial break in the 11th game and duly served out the match in the next.
"This felt like playing in a hurricane," admitted Wozniacki, who has yet to drop a set in the tournament.
"But it was the same for both players and I'm so happy to get through.
"When we were practising I thought 'Oh, it's not that windy today' but when we came out here I knew it was about just surviving, getting as many balls back in the court as possible and just run."
The Dane, a beaten finalist in New York 12 months ago, will take on Russia's Vera Zvonareva in the last four.
"She's on a winning streak, playing really well, really aggressively, so it's going to be a really tough match," added Wozniacki on the prospect of facing seventh seed Zvonareva.
"She made the finals of Wimbledon and is now in the semi-finals here so she's a great player and I'm going to go out there and do my best."
