Serves don't always have to be aces smashed down the court. As Murray explains, they can also be positioned in different parts of the court to set up future shots or to out-think an opponent.

"If you get the ball toss wrong you can't correct that," Murray says as he demonstrates the serve that has, in the build-up to the US Open, received praise for its steady improvement.

One part of Murray's game that separates him from the chasing pack is his remarkably athletic returns. So who better to provide tips on the correct technique of getting your opponents' serves back over the net?

"The most important thing is to shorten your strokes and keep them very compact," he explains because, on the Tour, Murray is accustomed to facing 140mph serves that leave him with less than a second to react.
