Richard Gasquet held his serve 13 times in a row after dropping the first set to eventually eliminate Tomas Berdych from the US Open.
The 12th seed will now play Roger Federer, who beat John Isner, in the quarter-finals after winning 2-6 6-3 6-4 6-1 in two hours and 27 minutes on Monday.
It didn't always look as though Gasquet would be able to secure his last eight berth after a wretched opening set. Berdych, the sixth seed, broke him twice as the Frenchman won a paltry 25 per cent of points on his second serve.
But the left-hander would roar back and Berdych would have just one more break point opportunity in the second and third sets.
Gasquet had wasted his only chance to break in the opening set but sealed a breakthrough twice to take the second, then grabbed the sole break to win the third.
With Berdych crumbling, he gave away consecutive service games in the fourth set, allowing Gasquet to win his first match in their five head-to-head meetings.
Gasquet's upcoming quarter-final will be just his third at a major since 2007.
