Former champion Maria Sharapova faces a tricky third round clash with big-hitting German Sabine Lisicki at the US Open on Friday.

Sharapova, winner of the 2006 event at Flushing Meadows, was taken to three sets against Alexandra Dulgheru last time out and may need to raise her game to see off Lisicki.

The duo will battle it out in the final match of the night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium. It should be an explosive contest between two of the most powerful players in the women’s game.

First up earlier in the day on Arthur Ashe is Johanna Larsson’s clash with Jelena Jankovic, with that being followed by two-time champion Venus Williams’ tussle with Sara Errani.

Elsewhere in the women’s third round, second seed Simona Halep takes on Croatian veteran Mirjana Lucic-Baroni on Grandstand, which also hosts the match between Andrea Petkovic and Caroline Wozniacki.

While the women will be fighting for places in the last 16, the second round of the men’s draw is scheduled to reach its conclusion on Friday.

Roger Federer is the highest seed in action, the five-time champion going up against Australia’s Samuel Groth in the first match of the night session on Arthur Ashe.

The only other men’s match to take place on the main court is David Ferrer’s clash with the enigmatic Bernard Tomic.

Away from Arthur Ashe, No 6 seed Tomas Berdych and seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov are both set to play in the afternoon against Martin Klizan and Dudi Sela respectively.
