Andy Murray is safely through to the second week of Wimbledon after a four-set victory over Tommy Haas.

The British number one defeated the German 6-4 6-7 (4/7) 6-3 6-2 on Centre Court to book his place in Monday's fourth round when he will face France's Richard Gasquet.

Although not as impressive as on Thursday when he demolished Xavier Malisse, Murray still had too much in his locker for the ageing former world number two.

Murray said: "It was a good match. I had a chance to win in straight sets but played a poor service game. But he had few chances on my serve and I played very well.

"I was pleased with the way I managed to play in the tight situations. My mentality on court was very good.

"The older you get, the more you get used to everything. I've got some good people around me and I'm just enjoying myself on court."

It was a match of fluctuating quality but one in which the fist-pumping Murray always provided the greater skill.

After losing the first six points of the match, Murray hit back in style by breaking the German's serve in the third game, courtesy of a precise cross-court forehand and a backhand on the run.

That proved enough to take the opener and when he broke again in the third game of the second, a comfortable victory looked on the cards.

However, Haas, whose career has been blighted by injuries, managed to stir himself into action and he retrieved the break in game eight as the momentum swung his way.

A tie-break resulted and Murray threw in a double-fault at the most inopportune of moments, allowing Haas to level the match.

The German was threatening to take full control but Murray showed great resolve to stave off two break points at 1-1 in the third set.

It was a crucial hold as Murray wrested back control with a break in the very next game.

Back in the ascendancy, Murray looked determined not to let things slip again as he let out shouts of delight and produced many of his now-familiar fist pumps.

One of his best shots of the tournament saw the Scot break the German's serve in the fifth game of the fourth set.

A wonderfully whipped forehand curled down the line to land on the baseline for a winner which effectively broke Haas' resolve.

It was soon all over, Haas saving two match points but not a third as he dumped a forehand into the net.
