Victoria Azarenka was sent crashing out of Wimbledon after being defeated 6-3 3-6 7-5 in the second round by Bojana Jovanovski.

The two-time semi-finalist and former world no 1 went into the tournament having played only one match since March but looked in decent enough form as she eased past Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in round one.

However she had not shaken off the rust sufficiently enough to get past Jovanovski, who completed a narrow victory despite hitting 19 fewer winners than her more decorated opponent.

Elsewhere in the women's draw Five-time champion Venus Williams progressed to the third round with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 victory over Karumi Nara.

The 34-year-old had not been past the second round of a grand slam since last year’s Australian Open but recovered from a slow start to defeat her Japanese opponent with ease.

The 30th seed won six straight points to take the first set in a tie-break before reeling off six games in a row to close out the second set in rapid fashion.

Williams served seven aces and had 43 winners during the contest, on Court Three, which lasted an hour and 31 minutes.

Williams, winner of seven major titles in total, was absent from Wimbledon last year and bowed out in the first round in 2012.

Another former champion, Petra Kvitova, also eased into the third round after clinching a 6-2 6-0 victory against Mona Barthel in just 55 minutes.

Kvitova, who won the Wimbledon title in 2011, completely dominated her opponent's serve despite the fact that Barthel ended with a first-serve percentage of 77.

Australian Open champion Li Na also made it through to the second round after securing a 6-2 6-2 victory over Yvonne Meusberger. Li is seeded second for the tournament and is hoping to make it past the quarter-finals for the first time.

Fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska also progressed, the 2012 finalist overpowering Casey Dellacqua 6-4 6-0.
