Australian youngster Nick Kyrgios saved nine match points before completing a 3-6 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 7-5 10-8 upset against Richard Gasquet.

The 13th seed looked to be easing to a place in the third round when he took the first two sets but could not complete the victory against his 19-year-old opponent.

Even after Kyrgios had pulled the contest back on level terms Gasquet had a multitude of chances to put the match away in the fifth set, but incredibly could not convert any of them.

There was another marathon clash in the men’s draw on Thursday as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga completed a 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 14-12 victory over Sam Querrey in a match which was held over from the day before.

Eighth seed Milos Raonic had no such troubles as he defeated Jack Sock 6-3 6-4 6-4 in just an hour and 43 minutes.

Australian Open champions Stanislas Wawrinka also had a fairly easy passage into the third round, although he did drop a set during his 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 3-6 7-5 win against Yen-Hsun Lu.

John Isner reached the third round for the first time, coming through a 19-17 tie-break in the opening set en route to beating 62nd-ranked Jarkko Nieminen of Finland.

Isner, the ninth-seeded American, hit 32 aces and did not face a break point during the 7-6 (19/17) 7-6 (7/3) 7-5 victory. The marathon tie-break at the end of the first set was the second longest - in terms of points - in Wimbledon history.

No 10 seed Kei Nishikori also made it through to the third round with ease as he clinched a 6-3 6-2 6-1 win against Denis Kudla.

Gael Monfils was another seed to fall, however, the Frenchman being beaten 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 6-7 (1-7) 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 by Jiri Vesely, who will play Kyrgios next in a battle of two wild-card entrants.
