Transfer news: Gary Bowyer hoping for transfer boost at Blackburn

Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer hopes that a meeting with the club's owners will free him to re-enter the transfer market.

Defensive reinforcements have become a top priority at Ewood Park following injuries to Matt Kilgallon and Tommy Spurr.

Rovers now have just four senior defenders available to them and would welcome the opportunity to bring in cover before the summer window closes.

We might try and go and do something, but if not we’ve got people who can go and play anywhere.

Bowyer is, however, aware that money is tight and that Venky’s may decide to keep the chequebook closed.

He is planning to discuss the issue with his board, with the versatility of others helping Blackburn through a tough time at present.

Bowyer said: “We might try and go and do something, but if not we’ve got people who can go and play anywhere.

“You saw that with Alex Baptiste and Jason Lowe (against Cardiff City).

“I thought Baptiste made an outstanding debut and showed why we signed him and showed why we need flexibility in the team.

A wonderful strike from Tom Cairney helped Blackburn to a 1-1 draw against Cardiff in the Championship opener.

“Jason Lowe was magnificent too at right-back, after being so dominant in midfield. It was a shame to take him out of there but unfortunately we had an injury to Matt Kilgallon.”

Bowyer added on the desire to add to the signings of Baptiste, Chris Brown and Luke Varney: “I’m going to have to have a conversation with the people above me.

“They’ve been very supportive to me all throughout my time here, and were again in me getting in Alex Baptiste, and I do understand we have to conform with Financial Fair Play and cut out cloth accordingly.”
