Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko has returned to his former club Midtjylland on loan for the rest of the season.

Sviatchenko has welcomed the move, hailing Midtjylland as "the club of his heart and youth".

He left the Danish club to join Celtic in 2016 and has made 63 appearances for the Scottish Premiership leaders over the last two years.

However, the 26-year-old centre-back has not featured for Celtic since the Champions League qualifiers, despite recovering from a knee injury several months ago.

Sviatchenko was told to find a new club as he fell further down the pecking order, when German Marvin Compper joined Celtic earlier this month.

Speaking on his return to the Danish club, Sviatchenko told Midtjylland's website: "I knew I had to find a new club and I had other options.

"When I had to choose, I did not doubt that I wanted to go back to Midtjylland - the club of my heart, the club of my youth."
