Shrewsbury have signed midfielder Jim O'Brien on a two-year contract following his departure from Sky Bet League One rivals Coventry.

The 28-year-old, who scored eight goals in 70 league outings for the Sky Blues, has also played for Motherwell and Barnsley, as well as enjoying a loan spell at Scunthorpe last term.

O'Brien is manager Micky Mellon's seventh new signing at Greenhous Meadow this summer.

"Everything here is lovely - it is really new and it is not a club that is living beyond its means in terms of building big stadiums that they can't fill which can be the case in League One," O'Brien told Shrewsbury's official website.

"He has signed a couple of warriors so hopefully they can do my tackling for me and look after me in there!
