Bristol City have completed the signing of Sunderland defender Adam Matthews on a season-long loan deal.

The 24-year-old returns to the club where he enjoyed a successful temporary spell at the back end of the 2015/16 campaign.

Matthews has successfully passed a medical and agreed terms on a loan deal for the entirety of the 2016/17 season, with no option of a recall.

Head coach Lee Johnson told Bristol City's official website: "I'm pleased to have Adam back with us. He did very well at the back end of last season and certainly fits the bill in terms of quality and experience at this level.

"He's still a good age. I know he enjoyed his time here last season and was delighted to come back, and I know the fans really took to him as well."

The 13-cap Wales international is a right-back who began his career at Cardiff City, where he made 48 appearances, scoring one goal.

The defender joined the Championship club in March in order to play games and made nine appearances as the team secured Sky Bet Championship survival.
