Brentford are targeting a new centre-back this summer and Stevenage's Ben Wilmot is one player on their list, Sky Sports News understands.

The Bees are set to lose Denmark defender Andreas Bjelland when his contract expires this summer and have been scouting for a potential replacement.

Wilmot, 18, is one they have watched extensively but so have other clubs, including Premier League Brighton, while the Bees have also kept an eye on Yeovil's Tom James.

Brentford have developed a reputation for developing young talent from the lower leagues and England U19 Wilmot has been a standout performer in League Two.

He has not played since March 10, however, having been withdrawn from the squad due to transfer negotiations.

Chairman Phil Wallace said on April 6 that there had been "developments that suggest a deal will be agreed shortly for him to move when the window opens", which led to reports he was joining Watford.

But the Hornets subsequently told Sky Sports News that they had ended any interest in the player.

Wilmot is a product of Stevenage's academy and broke into the first team earlier this season, making 15 appearances in total and 10 of them in the league.
