Rangers defender Darren McGregor has surprisingly left the club - only three months after being named player of the season.

The former St Mirren defender made 50 appearances under former bosses Ally McCoist, Kenny McDowall and Stuart McCall, scoring five goals.

But since Mark Warburton became manager, McGregor has fallen out of favour, and is leaving by mutual consent.

He moved to Ibrox last summer, and was praised for his committed displays while the rest of his team-mates struggled.

The 30-year-old has not featured in any of the club's six matches this season, as Danny Wilson and Rob Kiernan have been preferred at centre-half.

Warburton, speaking ahead of Wednesday's League Cup tie at Airdrie and before news of McGregor's departure was announced, said "a couple" of players might leave before the transfer window shuts next Tuesday.
