Liverpool 2017/18 Premier League season review

Jurgen Klopp

Read on for our review of their campaign, complete with the views of Soccer Saturday pundit Phil Thompson.

Finishing position: 4th (-)
Total points: 75 (-1)
FA Cup: Fourth round
Carabao Cup: Third round
Champions League: Finalists
Top scorer: Mohamed Salah (32)

Liverpool's Champions League feats could yet propel these players to greatness but it was also another fine season in the Premier League as Jurgen Klopp secured a second consecutive top-four finish for the club thanks to the heroics of Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian, a summer signing from Roma, scored 32 goals - a record for a 38-game Premier League season - as Liverpool played some sensational football. The 4-0 win over Arsenal and the dramatic 4-3 victory over Manchester City were among many highlights.

As well as Salah, there were many other individual success stories with the emergence of Trent Alexander-Arnold a source of excitement. Andrew Robertson made a big impact in his first season and the acquisition of Virgil van Dijk for a club record fee looks good business.

There is work to do before Liverpool can hope to challenge Man City for the title but they have shown that they are more than a match for them in one-off games. They could yet be going into next season's campaign as the European champions.

Liverpool became the first team to beat Man City in the Premier League this season with a memorable 4-3 victory in January. Three of the goals came in a crazy second-half spell that proved a precursor to the Champions League triumph over Pep Guardiola's team.

Worst day of 2017/18

Everything seemed set up for Liverpool to go to Manchester United and outplay Jose Mourinho's men but their old rivals succeeded in stifling Salah while causing problems of their own. Marcus Rashford's capitalised on indecision at the back to earn a 2-1 win.

PHIL THOMPSON'S VERDICT

Managerial review

He's done very well. Getting to a Champions League final and securing qualification for next season, with the quality of the football played, it has been a great season.

Player of year

Simply Salah. I'm not even going to pretend it is close because to do what he's done in a first season, not being an out-and-out striker, it has just been an astonishing season. Never in his wildest dreams could he have thought he would score the volume of goals he has.

2018/19 prospects

I think just like the other sides in the top six, the aim is to push Man City a lot closer. Every club will be gunning to get a bit closer to them.

Sky Bet title odds for 2018/19: 9/2
