Stevenage have signed Braintree defender Dean Wells for £25,000 on a one-year contract, with an option for a further year.
Wells, who played over 100 times for Braintree during a three-year spell, returns to the Football League 11 years on from his solitary appearance for Brentford.
Boro chairman Phil Wallace told the club's official website: "He continually impressed our head of recruitment and Graham Westley during last season and he has the enthusiasm, desire and determination to win that we seek in our players.
"He wants his chance. Graham led the cause to secure Dean and made it possible by his refusal to let the deal fall through, so he deserves great credit for that."
