Stelling: Backs the Red Devils to retain title
It's a dangerous game, making pre-season predictions. But with just days to go before the big kick-off in the Premier League, the Soccer Saturday gang have gallantly agreed to put their necks - and their credibility - on the line.
Who will lift the Premier League trophy in May? Which manager has made the shrewdest buy? Who is most likely to do a Derby?
And which member of the panel has been hogging the sun-loungers all summer?
Read on as the finest pundits on the box use their encyclopaedic football knowledge to predict the new season's stars, strugglers and stragglers, as well as give each other some gentle ribbing!
First up is Soccer Saturday frontman and all-round legend, Jeff Stelling...
I think Manchester United will win it but it will be extremely close. United are obviously ridiculously short of strikers going into the season - no Ronaldo, no Rooney and Saha injured but while Chelsea have got a fantastic squad, it will be very different for Scolari managing a squad week-by-week in the Premier League from being a national team manager. It'll be interesting to see how he copes with the stresses and strains - and Fergie will inevitably be trying to wind him up at every opportunity!

I'm tipping Arsenal to finish second, Liverpool third and Chelsea fourth. I wonder about Drogba - I'm not sure how fit he is and if he fancies it, and without him Chelsea are not the same side. But you look at Keane and Torres together at Liverpool, along with Carragher and Stevie Gerrard, and they're the Fabbest Four on Merseyside since you know who! Number one in the charts though? Not quite!
Fifth place is going to be all to play for. Juande Ramos is certainly making it his own team at Tottenham - I'm sure if you'd have told the Spurs fans when he first arrived that he was going to sell Robinson, Defoe, Keane, maybe Berbatov, they'd have thought: Hasta la vista, baby! But he's brought in exciting players in Modric and Bentley. I just worry about them defensively. Hopefully the Brazilian keeper Gomes can help sort things out a bit but otherwise they are going to have to score four or five to win every game. They're certainly a team to watch. I thought Manchester City might have been a good bet but they've got worries over their finances, although I think Jo could be a big, big hit in the Premier League. And I expect Portsmouth to have a terrific season, too. Defoe and Crouch looks like a fantastic partnership - Defoe got eight in twelve at the end of last season and that was alongside a donkey like Baros!

Manchester City for me are the dark horses. I like Mark Hughes a lot, I think he's better than Sven, put it that way. They faded away last season but they've got Elano, Petrov and Bojinov, and two terrific players at the back in Richard Dunne and Micah Richards so they won't be far away. I'm backing Aston Villa to have a good season, too. With Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor and John Carew, they're inevitably going to score goals even if they haven't got Gareth Barry at the start of the season. I think Steve Sidwell is a good enough player to fill his boots. I can see it being a lot tighter, from first down to eightth, say, than it was last season or even in recent seasons, and I think we'd all welcome that.
People reflect on Derby and think the gap's too big to bridge but Sunderland stayed up last season, although they obviously spent a lot of money, and everyone wrote Wigan off three seasons ago and they're still here now. Having said that, Hull and Stoke in particular are going to find it hard. Dean Windass is 40 in April and if Hull have 40 points by the time Dean Windass is 40, Phil Brown will be the manager of the season! You want to give them both a chance but it's very hard to. On the other hand, West Brom might have lost Kevin Phillips and Zoltan Gera but Tony Mowbray will get them playing football. They might lose some six or seven nil but I think they've got enough about them to stay up. So I think Bolton could take their place in the bottom three. They've lost Anelka, Stelios, Campo - the nucleus of the team. They're relying on this £11m Swede, Johan Elmander but if he turns out to be a turnip, then they're in trouble.
Torres is certainly the bookmakers' favourite but my money would go on Emmanuel Adebayor. I saw him at the Emirates in pre-season and I thought he looked fantastic. Bearing in mind that there are question marks over Ronaldo, who is going to miss the first two months, Drogba, and Torres - because with Rafa, you never know if he is going to play or not - I think Adebayor will have a massive season for Arsenal.

Paul Robinson for Blackburn. £3.5m for an England goalkeeper and I'm tipping him to have a fantastic season. He'll probably need to, because I don't think Blackburn will have a great season but I fancy him to be one of the best buys. Equally, I think David Bentley going the other way will be a huge success. He'll love the glamour and glitz of Spurs.
Dave Kitson is a bit of a desperation buy but I'll tell you what has surprised me, Deco going to Chelsea. He cost a lot of money, he's already in his 30s, and while he showed at the end of last season and at Euro 2008 what he can do, I'm absolutely unconvinced that he will do it week-in, week-out in the Premier League.
Well, Charlie Nicholas will come back with the best tan - no contest! He's been in Majorca sunning himself so he'll be the same colour as the dark glasses he wears every Saturday morning!

Im a man city fan and I personally think we can only come 5,6 or 7th I think the top 4 are too strong apart frm Tottenham who are likely to push liverpool or Arsenal all the way for 4th place. I think that Sunderland will have a good season this year and could end up finishing 8th or 9th with the new signings they have brought in frm Tottenham and also Newcastle wont have a good season again the highest they will come is 11th and sorry united fans but chelsea have got to win the title this season with Frank Lampard signing a new contract and Essien will boss the midfield. Aston villa are a strong side and could end up 6th however the lack of signings for Everton can only be a bad thing aswell and letting Andrew Johnson go to Fulham he will be a massive hit there with his regular 20 goals this season and I've got to say if Blackburn let Roque santa Cruz go its relegation for them along with Stoke and Boltonand Cristiano Ronaldo will have a duffer this season with hte golden boot goin to Fernando Torres or Berbatov I also reckon that Jo for Man City will have a great sason along with Afonso Alves and Vagner love if he comes to the premiership Come on City

As a rovers fan i seriously don't think that we are going down this season. I must admit that it will be a hard season with bentley and friedel gone, sparky gone to manage at city but with them gone we have got a decent manager in paul ince and we all know that he has to prove himself which will take time but blackburn have made good appointments so far. i think we will finish possibly mid-table pushing for top ten. my team to win it will be chelsea because of their manager and the players they have brought in. champions league spots will be as always liverpool in 3rd and arsenal in 4th. 5th spot will be either spurs. suprise package i think will be protsmouth just because of the strike force they have up front, keep them fit and that's a lot of goals thay have, and thay have a solid back four and an in form keeper who no doubt will keep that form, or sunderland could be suprising for me, the players thay've bought i think are great in chimbonda, steed malbranque and el'hadj diouf compared to the players they bought last year, they won't be in the top eight but pushing for top ten along with rovers. golden boot i think will go to either fernando torres or emmanuel adebayor. best buy is luca modric,he is a quality buy for spurs and i watched him in euro and he was fantastic. barking buy for me is elmander for boltan, he is an unproved centre forward who is apparently worth 11m and is playing for bolton which just tops it haha. teams to go down i think will be hull, stoke, and bolton (hopefully)

Danny Howard (man city fan) says...
Suprised to see the amount of people saying man city will finish 6th, 7th or 8th this season. As a city fan im really worried about this season. Im a big fan of Mark Hughes and think we had a positive season ahead of us. however, the ownership problems are really worrying and we are the kind of team who generally implode on the pitch when things happen off the pitch. I think we have a chance in the Carling cup thought. I think united will win the league, chelsea 2nd, arsenal 3rd, spurs 4th and liverpool 5th, portsmouth 6th and newcastle 7th. After that i think city, villa and everton will make up the top 10 but not sure in what order. Best buy has to be Bentley, he's going to be a massive hit in that spurs side. Worst buy Luke Young. Villa should be aiming to sign much better full backs than Young.

i think liverpool or man utd to win the premierleague title chelsea will flop under big phil while arsenal do not have depth in their squad tottenham could mount a top 4 challenge but it will be tough its about time liverpool ended their long title wait but they need to beat man utd and torres and keane can tear through any defence torres for golden boot keane for best buy

Sean Williams-beckford says...
i have to agree with jeff when he says man utd will win, they need another striker desperately though, if chelsea get robinho then they will win the premier league, villa for top 5 finish, tottenham dont have enough depth in their squad, 2 strikers and they got rid of their best striker in keane and tainio chimbonda kaboul and malbranque (one of their best players) who are really good players, sunderland have got really good players and i think diouf will start on the right hand side with malbranque on the left and richardson and yorke, as where spurs have no depth, the black cats have too much, there will be many competitions for the 4 midfield roles

I think United for the title Chelsea second Arsenal and Liverpool 3rd / 4th (either way round) but if either have a bad season then Spurs will be there. Dos Santos looks the buy of the century but there must be some reason that Barca sold him so cheap

personally i can see chelsea winning the title this year because they seem to just have that extra bit of depth in their squad that man utd are lacking at the moment, also the absence of ronaldo for the first 2 months of the season is a massive blow. i think liverpool might have a chance too if they hit the ground running and cut out the errors that have blundered them the past few seasons under benitez. keane and torres are a mouthwatering prospect upfront so lets hope they deliver! i think arsenal will struggle this season not beacuse of their lack of quality but because of the inexperience of the team, nasri is a good signing but is he really capable of filling hlebs boots just yet? totthenam to grab fifth because with the exception of loosing keane i think they have really brought some fantastic players in this summer. unfortunatley i see stoke and hull going straight back down just because they dont seem to have the financial power to pull in players of premier league quality. west brom have strengthend over the summer and i can see them just staying up with possibly bolton going down. i think spending 11 million on elmander was a risky move and might backfire on them. best buy of the summer so far for me is modric to totthenam because his abillity is very clearly of the highest level. golden boot to go to drogba, i think if he stays fit this season he will really get back to his best and start pouring in the goals. worst buy of the season so far for me is freidel to villa which sounds suprising i know because i dont doubt his abillity as a keeper i just think paying nearly £2 million for a 37/8 year old keeper is a little bit extravagant and i would have rather seen them spend a little bit more on a younger keeper such as carson.

Dont write off the Mighty, Mighty Potters. We are up for a scrap this season and will not go down without a fight. Anyone comparing us to Derbys pitiful effort of a season (07/08) will be in for a nasty surprise. We will beat Bolton on the first day of the season to get off to a perfect start. The Britannia Stadium will be a fortress again this campaign. Come on you rip roaring potters.

I think Chelsea could pip Man. Utd to the title this year with Liverpool and Arsenal completing the top 4, for a change!! Everton, Villa and maybe Spurs for best of rest. All promoted sides will struggle but will compete with Bolton, Fulham and maybe Wigan, unlike Derby!! Champions league to stay in England and likely Manchester.........Think if Berbatov signs for Man. Utd he will score bag full of goals, otherwise Bentley top signing.

i am a beloved villa fan and i think we will shock everyone this year i really feel that mon is building a great team there at villa park and if barry stays then our midfield wiil be awesome, i think united for title chelsea second liverpool third then one of arsenal, villa, or spurs. for relegation it must be bolton, hull and stoke. stelling your a great man and i love your singging james brown absoulte brilliant m8.

I believe that Liverpool will win the Premiership this season because of the depth they have in their squad. Man Utd will come second and Tottenham will battle it out with Chelsea for the third spot. My suprise package will be Portsmouth even though they have sold Muntari, they performed well in the Community Shield, although Man Utd didn't field their best team. The best signing will be dos santos, and the worst will be Bolton's £11m striker. The golden boot will either go to Torres or Tevez. Relegations? hard question but I honestly think that Bolton, Blackburn and Stoke will go down. Olofinjana and Kitson are good buys for Stoke but who else have they really brought in that has enough quality to hack it in the top divsion. Hull will sign King, Pizarro, and Campbell for strikers and Rocha from Tottenham on loan. Come on u ULL!!!!!!

man utd to win the league, arsenal 2nd,chelsea 3rd, liverpool wont win the league not because they lack individual talent but because rafa is clueless, im sure about spurs either they may score 3 a game but the chances are they'll concede 4 and gomes can be quite eccentric. villa, portsmouth, man city(if they sort there internal problems out), and spurs to fight it out for 5th. apart from the obvious relegation candidates i think west ham are really gonna struggle. best signing samir nasri, golden boot torres or adebayor

John Whitton (Newcastle United fan) says...
I like how all Boro fans can talk about is Newcastle, probably because they have nothing to discuss about their own team as they are mediocre. Newcastle are top of the NE teams, finishing above Sunderland and the smogs last year. Newcastle for 7th this year, we need to reach the Inter-Toto and get into the UEFA cup. A good few cup runs - possibly trying to win the Carling cup? - and positive attacking football and us Geordies will be happy. If Kev can get some consistancy out of the team and we see the best of Owen, Martins, Viduka, N'Zogbia and Milner and we remain solid at the back with Collocini and Taylor, we should be okay. Five years with Kev and we will be challenging the top four, no doubt.
