Saracens fly-half Glen Jackson has revealed some surprising plans for a career after he hangs up his rugby boots.
The New Zealander has opted to shun traditional career moves such as coaching or media work in favour of becoming a referee in the sport he loves.
Speaking to the Rugby Club, Jackson revealed he has been pursuing the idea for several years and hopes that his knowledge of the professional game will give him an insight that other officials might not have.
He said: "It's been six years since I decided I wanted to become a referee. I used to flat with somebody in New Zealand, who was just getting into it. I picked up the interest through him.
"He seemed to have a lot of time off and it seemed pretty much like a rugby player's lifestyle and I wanted to carry on with that after I stopped playing.
"I could have gone into something like coaching, but I suppose this was something that could be done by someone who has played the professional game. It could highlight other players trying to get into it.
"Every game needs a referee and I think if more players that have played the game get into it, you'll hopefully get a better standard - purely because of the feeling for the game that you've played all your life.
"I was trained to be a teacher and I think that helps too, it's pretty much about controlling 30 kids anyway."
Former Bay Of Plenty star Jackson admitted that the decision has been the subject of jokes from his team-mates, but reckons some of them could be tempted to follow his path.
"Back in New Zealand I got a fair bit of stick, and it's the same from the guys over here," he added. "But I think they realise it's probably not a bad move and there's a couple of other guys in our team that have thought about it too.
"After a first laugh-off, I think they've realised it's not a bad move."
