Peter Reid
That is no disrespect to the players that are there now. I found it difficult getting players up to the north east for whatever reason.
Reid, who spent eight years in charge of Sunderland and helped them gain promotion to the Premiership twice, is delighted that they have held onto the Premiership status after being promoted last season.
"It is a terrific football club with terrific support," said Reid on Goals On Sunday.
"Quinny [Nial Quinn] has down a great job and he has kept them up which is the main objective.
"It is a great stadium and great to see it packed again. He [Quinn] was a great player and it looks like he is going to be a great chairman too.
"I think they need to enjoy staying up and I am sure the financers will be out there trying to get better quality players.
"That is no disrespect to the players that are there now. I found it difficult getting players up to the north east for whatever reason.
"But it is a great football club, and to be fair to Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Sunderland, it is a great area and it is brilliant when all three are up there."
Reid also pays tribute to manager Roy Keane and hoped he has more luck in persuading players to join the club than he did.
"He has done a remarkable job. They were in the bottom three of the Championship when he got there and now they are up and staying up.
"It looks like the good times are back. It is hard getting players in though, everyone is trying to do the same.
"In my time I tried to get the likes of Robbie Keane, to get that extra talent is difficult, but I think Roy Keane is pretty persuasive."
