My biggest battle - Prescott

Last updated: 26th July 2007

Former Saints, Hull and Wakefield full-back Steve Prescott told Boots 'n' All of his determination to battle back to full health after being diagnosed with a rare form of stomach cancer.

Prescott will be returning to Knowsley Road this Sunday for a benefit match to be held in his honour.

The game will see Prescott's all-conquering 1996 Saints side going head-to-head with a Rugby League Legends XIII in what promises to be an emotional occasion for all concerned.

And the former Ireland international admitted he can hardly wait to return to his old stomping ground.

"It's fantastic to be going back again," Prescott said. "I can't wait really, it's going to be a great day and I know the fans and the players are going to really enjoy it.

"I just want to thank all the players that are coming because it's very generous of them."

As a player Prescott was renowned for his pace and commitment and he told Boots 'n' All he will need to call on all his fighting qualities in the battle against his illness.

"It's a whole new battle this one," he added. "With Rugby you just block it out and get on with it, it's a job and something you enjoy.

"Obviously this is not something I enjoy and not something I want and I know it's a big battle ahead.

"Hopefully I've got a strong enough character to keep battling for as long as I can.

"I've got chemotherapy starting soon and I know that's going to be hard as well but I've got to fight.

"I was a fighter on the pitch and I'll be a fighter off it as well."
