Lessons have been learnt

The RFL's match officials' director Stuart Cummings told Boots n' All that some hard lessons have been learnt following the refereeing controversy that marred the Millennium Magic last weekend.

Referee Steve Ganson wrongly awarded a match-winning try on the final hooter of the Leeds-Bradford game on Sunday to Rhinos substitute Jordan Tansey.

Television replays showed that Tansey was clearly offside as he chased captain Kevin Sinfield's penalty kick at goal which rebounded off a post.

Ganson subsequently admitted he should have consulted video referee Ashley Klein.

The Bulls have since had their appeal against their 42-38 defeat turned down by the RFL and Cummings told Boots n All that the fall-out this week had been hard to deal with.

"It's been a difficult for the group as a whole and we are having to build up from that," Cummings said.

"We've all seen the footage as has Steve Ganson and he is devastated.

"We all like to be professional and do our jobs correctly but unfortunately on this occasion we slipped up as a group and we've had to look in to that."

Despite the concession of a mistake on the part of the officials Cummings conceded that it hasn't made the defeat any easier for the Bulls to swallow.

"It's very difficult to limit the damage because there has been an aggrieved party but we've held our hands up and we've got to move on and make sure this sort of thing doesn't happen again.

"We've got to learn a big lesson from this and we will, we'll move on and put things in place and make sure it doesn't happen again."
