Grading the Crusaders

Celtic Crusaders

Celtic Crusaders were the latest side to come under the Boots 'n' All licensing spotlight.

With clubs being asked to put their bids in for a permit to take part in the competition from 2009, every week Angela Powers will be out and about seeing how the candidates meet the necessary criteria.

Millennium Magic may have been a huge success down in Cardiff, but will Rugby league be just as successful if it moved down the road to Bridgend?

That is where the Celtic Crusaders are hoping to convince the Rugby league that they deserve a licence to play in the Super League for the next three years.

The Brewery Field is where the Crusaders would play all their games, but it does not quite meet the standards of a Super League Stadium.

With a capacity of just over 8,000 it falls short of the standard 12,000 capacity, nor does it attract an average crowd of 10,000.

However the Crusaders do pick up points for junior development and no salary cap breaches, as well as having no club within 20 miles.

And although they do only get a C grade, it is the fact that they are Wales that could be the key to their Super League hopes.

"What is happening here is very exciting," said Celtic Crusaders chief executive David Thompson.

"Everything we have achieved up to date has been achieved in National Division Two.

"We have been nominated as the Welsh sports team of the year, which for a rugby league club based in Wales is impressive.

"The RFL mission statement is to promote the game of rugby league. There is no better way of promoting a sport than by putting a team in a new country.

"We would not be representing a village; we would not be representing a town, a city of even a region.

"The Celtic Crusaders in the Super League would represent a whole nation."
