Warne: Flintoff warning

One guy can make a difference to your side, to the mechanics of your team, but it won't be the difference between winning and losing.

Shane Warne has warned England not to expect miracles from Andrew Flintoff.

The Lancashire all-rounder was called into the 12 following the first Test draw with South Africa at Lord's.

It is the first time Flintoff has been involved in the Test side since the ill-fated Ashes tour of 2006-07 and Warne says it would be wrong to expect him to make an immediate impact.

"If you think one bloke's going to change it, it won't," he told Sky Sports News.

"It's a combination, you need (Michael) Vaughan, Flintoff and (Kevin) Pietersen playing extremely well and everyone else just to play their part. It's no use them just bowling rubbish or not making any run.

"One guy can make a difference to your side, to the mechanics of your team, but it won't be the difference between winning and losing.

"But if England want to give themselves a good chance against anybody, I think Flintoff needs to be in the team."

Hungry

Warne also backed Pietersen to go on and become one of the greats of the game.

The South African-born batsmen followed up his switch-hitting heroics with 152 in the first innings at Lord's, but that is just the tip of the iceberg, says his former Hampshire team-mate.

"At the moment he's right up there with the best players in the world," he said.

"I think the other day what we saw with his switch-hitting, his switch-slogging, whatever you want to call it, we're just touching the surface.

"He has got as much ability as anybody playing the game; it's just whether his mind works properly, his attitude towards the game - if he's still hungry, if it's still important - and if he doesn't get too far ahead of himself.

"If he does all those well and keeps his feet on the ground he could be as good as anyone."

Wonderful

And Warne, over here to promote the World Series Poker, warned England fans that the Aussies are far from a busted flush.

With Adam Gilchrist and Glenn McGrath among those to join the legendary leg-spinner in retiring, the cynics suggest Ricky Ponting's side are on the wane.

But Warne insists there is still more than enough talent at their disposal.

"We're very lucky in Australia in that we've got some wonderful players with both the bat and the ball," he said.

"Shaun Tait is just about itching ready to go and we've got some other wonderful players around and in a year's time, I'm sure they'll be ready for England."
