Return for Venables?

Gazza in his England days

If Harry did not want it and Tottenham were not ready to let him go then I would give that man Terry Venables another shot. The man is an unbelievable manager and Harry is a similar type of bloke.

Paul Gascoigne told Sky Sports News HD that if Harry Redknapp turns down the England role, then Terry Venables is the man for the job.

Fabio Capello's shock exit has created a vacancy for an England manager, just four months away from the start of Euro 2012. Harry Redknapp is the overwhelming favourite to take over but that would mean some clever negotiations between his club Tottenham and the FA if he was to take on the job before the Euros.

"Harry Redknapp is the obvious choice but I don't think Tottenham will want to release him," said Gascoigne on Sky Sports News HD.

"He is a great bloke and everyone would love him as the England manager and everyone would want to play for him - he has proved that with the clubs he has been too. He is like Terry Venables - if Harry did not want it and Tottenham were not ready to let him go then I would give that man Terry Venables another shot. The man is an unbelievable manager and Harry is a similar type of bloke.

"If Harry was given the role then in my mind he would do a fantastic job. A foreign manager is not for me - I have nothing against Capello but an English manager is what we need to get the team going again."

Gazza had some sound advice for whoever eventually does take over from Capello: "One has got to be team spirit, don't think you are bigger than any of the players and don't try and change the players.

"These players get selected for England for the way they have played at their club but when they get to England they try and change them - just let them continue to enjoy their football. If a player plays in a certain position for his club then let him play that position for his country - don't try and chop and change.

"We need to get some great spirit behind the team because that is what we are missing so there is definitely something not right in the England camp. If we can sort that out then we have a chance of going all the way in any tournament."
