Kaymer: celebrates maiden Tour win in Abu Dhabi

Mark Roe and Denis Pugh believe Martin Kaymer can be the new Bernhard Langer and dominate the European Tour for years to come.

Following Kaymer's maiden European Tour win at the Abu Dhabi Championship, Golf Night's experts have been impressed with the German's ability and believe that he now has the calmness to go from strength to strength.

"He learnt an awful lot about his personality," said Roe, "he learnt calmness under pressure which was something that he would have been learning slowly last year with the opportunities that he had. He had a lot of chances last year to win.

"He would have sat down and wondered why he didn't do that and this is exactly what he learnt: to keep things slow and calm under pressure."

Kaymer led the Abu Dhabi Championship from the opening round and his superb form put him 17 under through 54 holes.

He struggled to find that form in the final round and four bogeys after 12 holes gave Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson a chance to catch the 23-year-old.

But Kaymer showed character to regain his composure and see Westwood off by four strokes.

"He looked at the leaderboard," continued Roe, "he knew Westwood had got close to him so perhaps it was a far better victory that way for him in his learning process."

Denis Pugh was also impressed with Kaymer's performance, even though Kaymer himself did not seem that excited to win: "I think I'd be more excited than he is about it!" said Pugh.

"He didn't think he'd make the Ryder Cup team and he is now being talked about as a candidate.

"Last year he could have had a win but let it go, this time he didn't let it go."

Sensational

Kaymer is currently fifth in the order of merit and into the World top 35 which Roe described as "sensational given that he's been on the tour just the one year."

"If he stays in that position the doors that will open will be dreamland for him - the US Masters, US Open and the major championships beckon.

"He would not have dreamed this early in the year to be looking at being at that sort of status in the world of golf."

Kaymer's win was the 53rd German winner on tour with Bernhard Langer having 42 to his name, and Pugh believes that Kaymer can carry the flag for his country and emulate the great man himself.

"Bernhard is such a central figure in German golf," said Pugh.

"The German golf scene get a lot of amateurs that don't break through and Kaymer came along, and I'd heard a lot about him when he was about 14, 15 what a great prospect he was.

"He went all the way and had that heart to be a top player, very much in the mould of Langer - very calm, nothing excites him too much, nothing depresses him too much, he just keeps churning out the scores and I think he'll be around for a long, long time."
