The Real Monty: On Golf Night
I was pretty happy, safe. We got round without hitting anything.
Colin Montgomerie
Quotes of the week
We all know Monty can drive. He may not be Tiger Woods or top of the stats but the man can drive.
But this week on Golf Night Monty tried a different type of driving and instead of reaching for his Yonex Cyberstar, the big man from Scotland was reaching for his crash helmet.
In the latest edition of The Real Monty, Colin took a turn at rally driving with three-time world champion, Andy Priaulx. And he loved it.
He said: "This has been great fun, Andy has been driving one of these incredible cars and it is amazing. To go 160 (mph) down that straight doesn't seem possible and to break so late as these guys do is quite phenomenal.
"You are helping him in the passenger seat and there is no bl**dy break pedal there. It is fantastic.
"You only realise how good pros are at any sport until you actually go with them and are taught by them.
"I suppose they would feel the same about us but we certainly feel the same about them and that is an experience that we are fortunate to have because the general public don't always have that fantastic experience of somebody at the top of his game, a three-time world champion, taking you round a circuit at breakneck speed."
We all know that if Monty faced a five-footer to win the Ryder Cup for Europe on Singles Sunday he would be as cool as a cucumber but was he nervous with the pedal to the metal round Goodwood?
"I would have been if I hadn't got complete faith with who was with me," said Monty.
"I am a very bad passenger normally, I think most of us are, but with him in charge there was no fear.
"He took off all his anti-skid things and threw the thing around but even then there was no fear for ever losing control."
And Monty even got to have a go for himself although not in Andy's car but a pretty speedy BMW. Here is how he thought he got on.
"Not bad, I was pretty happy, safe," he said. "We got round without hitting anything but at the same time it is exhilarating.
"It is actually better to have him drive you than to drive yourself. We all think we can drive until you see them."
The next time you'll see Monty it will be back on the golf course at the WGC Accenture Matchplay - live on Sky Sports.
