Damien McGrane
Mark Roe praised Damien McGrane's short game as the Irishman won the Volvo China Open.
McGrane held his nerve to secure his maiden Tour victory, but did not need to be at his best over the final 18, with his one-over-par round more than enough to see him lift the title as his rivals all fell away.
"It was an understatement when he said his short game kept him in it, said three-time European Tour winner Roe on Golf Night.
"He only hit 36 greens out of the 72, so that is one out of every two holes he missed the green, but he had four chip ins.
"But more remarkable than that, he had 96 putts over the week. If you think 36 putts, two putts a green, is regulation and that is what we expect.
"But he has broken 25 putts on three of the four days - that was the key to a great victory.
"Plus a great mental strength as well," added Roe.
"You have to believe in yourself so strongly when your game is not brilliant.
"We know he is not the longest ball hitter on the European tour, but he knows his strengths, he plays to those and he has a lot of self belief."
