Jamie Redknapp believes Jurgen Klopp can get Liverpool performing at their peak again and bring the club's fans back on side if he is named the club's next manager as expected.

The Merseysiders are in advanced talks with the former Borussia Dortmund coach and hope to make an appointment before the weekend.

Redknapp is impressed with the German's track record and thinks he can make the kind of impact that gets the side firing once more.

They have won just once in their last nine outings and that led to Brendan Rodgers' sacking after Sunday's 1-1 draw with city rivals Everton.

Sky Sports pundit Redknapp - a Liverpool player from 1991 to 2002 - said: "I think he's the ideal person. He's worked a lot with young players at Dortmund and he has an enthusiasm in him.

"He seems the sort of guy who can get players working extremely hard and I think that's exactly what Liverpool need.

"They haven't played badly at times, they've just had a couple of uncomfortable results. When you play at home, especially in a big stadium, you need the fans behind you.

"I've felt a couple of times at Anfield this season that the fans seemed a bit restless. Hopefully Klopp coming in will address that and I think the players will look forward to working with him too."

Klopp was hugely popular with Dortmund fans as he led them to two Bundesliga titles in seven years at the Westfalenstadion.

Having also led them to the Champions League final against Bayern Munich at Wembley in 2013, Redknapp believes he has the right characteristics to succeed.

Liverpool have won just once in nine games, most recently drawing with Everton

He added: "You've got to have a big personality and you've got to be able to handle pressure. You've got to accept there are going to be good times and bad.

"More than anything, the fans want to see a bit of passion. You want to see players at it and you want to see players enjoying their football.

"That's what he does, his Dortmund team played a very high-tempo style and some of the football they played was really good to watch - I think that's what Liverpool fans want to see."
