Stop over-reacting about a meaningless friendly. Yes there could have been improvements, yes the performance could have been better but lets look at some cold hard facts. Gerrard, Rooney etc. were always going to go through the motions in this match. There is no Euro 2008 spot to fight for and for them at this stage of the season the key is to stay fit for more important games for their clubs. You can't really knock them for that. A meaningless friendly or a Champions league final? Secondly don't buy into the rubbish that foreigners are to blame for the downfall of our players. Ask yourself a few questions 1) Would Jenas, Defoe, Bent, Downing, Matthew Taylor, Steven Taylor, Jamie Carragher, Jermain Pennant and Joey Barton get in the Croatian and Russian teams? 2) If your answer was yes then surely our pool of players were better then those of the Croatian and Russian teams that beat us to Euro 2008, as that is the case Why didn't we qualify? The reason there are foreigners here in the first place is because in general the English players are either over-priced (17 million on Darren Bent, 16 million for Thierry Henry) OR just not good enough. We need to look at the grassroots level or just at the local politics. In primary schools today the next footballers won't be allowed to kick a leather ball in the playground because it might hurt someone, the government charges for most leisure centres (google Wenger "If this happened in France there would be a revolution") For any of you that have kids consider how often your kid is encouraged to play football or any other sport. It's my generation coming through now and I can see exactly why we aren't going anywhere. But then also think again, losing to France away from home with a veteran goalkeeper and right winger, without a natural goalscorer and in a system our players are still trying to learn just 1-0 is not the end of the world. Get a grip!

A suggestion i would make is the F.A. looking into bringing back the home Internationals instead of these pointless friendlies, the fervour and the passion i remember from those games would tell you a hundred times more about how a player handles himself in a pressure cooker than any of these "exhibition " matches. I would also be advising Capello that pulling on the England shirt means u spill your own blood for your country and if you don,t have that spirit within you for every game then please leave the building. As for Tim Lewis,s comment, when have you ever heard an english fan advise a player was world class recently? The last world class player,s we had i can think of was Shearer and Gascoigne in his pomp.

I have been an England supporter for 35 years, and I must say that I am rather disappointed with the whole set-up. First of all, too many domestic games are played. Secondly, I believe the Premiership is loaded with too many foreigners, and IT IS A PROBLEM. Look at Arsenal, Chelsea, and Man Utd. If England are rebuilding after the failed campaign of Euro 2008, and the sub standard performance in Germany, you would think someone with some authority would realize what's going on. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand what's going on. The owners are afraid to gamble on the youngsters and would rather pay for the foreign players in order to get into Europe and keep attendance high. Again look at Arsenal. They should gradually raise the required number of English players each year until it is required that at least 6 English born players must be on the field. Take your lumps now, because if things continue this way it won't matter who coaches the side. I find it hard to believe that Wes Brown, Wayne Bridge, Downing, and Beckham are world class players. Are you kidding me. And when was the last time Gerrard or Lampard did anything in an International ? Pathetic and laughable. The clock is ticking.

I can't agree with the person who criticised David Beckham. The man always puts in a 100% performance and can play for England for another two years albeit as a squad player. He has more right to be in the team than overated players like Crouch, Downing, Lescott and Brown. England at the moment are also overated and must build for the future by letting Capello experiment and hopefully send out the best team available when the world cup qualifiers start. Players like Bentley, Lennon, Davies and Agbongalour i am sure will prove to be important to Englands future and i'm afraid that certain so called established stars will have to make way. I'll have to join the ranks of fans who are calling for foreign quotas to be introduced as home grown players are being ignored and played in lower leagues or reserve teams. As a spurs fan i am sure Arsenal fans are thinking here comes another poke at us, well if the cap fits so to speak.

Tim Lewis (Manchester United fan) says...

As a Welshman I took great delight in watching England fail to impress in Paris. Perhaps it is time for English fans to realise that their squad is not world class. I feel that they look so good playing for their clubs because of the foreign talent such as Ronaldo and Torres making them look better than they are.

Alex Owen says...

Why is it that the England always keep picking the same players you pick someone like Beckham who plays mickey mouse football in America what more do players like Robert Green and Joe Cole have to do to get in the team instead of players like Gerrard and Ashely Cole and giving the captains armband to Ferdiand was a joke and when you watch the England Rugby you can see the players bellow out the national athem with pride and respect whereas when you watch the England football only have of them sing

Jonathan Thompson (Aston Villa fan) says...

I still can't beleive Ashley Young was dropped from the squad. We are talking about the assist king of the Premiership here. That's not to mention he has no support from any wing-backs, resulting in him being double marked more often than not. Put Ashley Cole behind Ashley Young, Joe Cole on the right and drop Beckham into the centre with Barry. Gerrard in front and Rooney up front, I think Capello's formation could just work.

Ant Leigh says...

Well, 45 minutes of half decent football does not an international make! After Rooney and Gerrard went off at half time this game turned into, yet another, cringeworthy dull performance by England. Owen and Crouch just don't deserve to be there. Crouch is a player that should only be used as a desparate last resort because the temptation is to launch high balls up the pitch to a 7' tall striker who has a head like a bag of spanners. Owen is a good striker but who has absolutely no ball control at all. If he has to take a snapshot he is pretty good but make him control the ball and shoot he is useless. I have never seen an international striker with such a poor first touch! When will Capello give Dean Ashton a chance? Ok he's been out for a long time with injuries but he has far more quality than either of the two halftime substitute "strikers" on Wednesday! To quote Chubby Brown, they couldn't score in a brothel with a fiver stuck out of their ears!

Lee Bateman (Middlesbrough fan) says...

Peter Piper obviously has not got a clue about football. Stewart Downing is a very good footballer who on Wednesday did more than certain other England Players. Who else can you play left midfield apart from Cole or Downing. Capello will get it right it's only his second game. Remember Bobby Robson when he first took charge?

Ali Riaz (Barnsley fan) says...

The problem, dear readers, is not with Fabio Capello. The problem is with the English team. A major overhaul in the selection of the players may bring about the desired result for the English fans.

Neale Dalton (Middlesbrough fan) says...

Steven Gerrard absolutely awful again.Has this so called world class player ever had a good game for his country? He cant reproduce his club form for England .Never has.Never will. Yet he is approaching 50 caps for his country. Capello will go the same way as other managers because Gerrard and the rest of the cant do, or cant be bothered to do, keep getting picked.

Elliott Killen (Fulham fan) says...

The problem is quite simply the amount of foreign players currently plying thier trade in the prem. Even the clubs youth teams are swamped by foreigners, for example Arsenal had only 1 english player (walcott) in thier entire squad v chelsea. The FA and premier league need to take immediate action and limit the amount of foreign players at prem clubs, otherwise England will NEVER challenge for a world cup or Euro championships again, afterall the players that started against France on wednesday were average nothing more.

Terry Smith says...

When will the English footballing public finally realise that E nglish players just are not good enough to compete with players from the European Latin countries or from South America. Set your sights lower and bring back the traditional matches with the other countries from the British Isles and be happy when you happen to beat one of them. West Ham supporter.

The Mafster says...

I think that Capello has made the same mistake as the two mamagers before him have made...bringing Beckham back into the side. A backwards step and a pointless one too. He is not playing regular football and he is just rubbish in the game. Wes Brown is the other fatal flaw here. A player that does not deserve a chance for the England stage as he is a terrible defender. No offence to Man U. fans out there but honestly, what does Alex Ferguson see in him. Terrible. Captaincy was also wrong and it just seems to me that all Capello has done is picked a few Man U players because of there league status. I also think that Capello has not done his homework and feel that he has a serious uphill task with himself let alone the rubbish players we have. To stand a chance, the first thing he needs to do is dump Beckham in the gutter...once and for all. Beckham is no heroe, he is no god, he is even not a football player. This man is at the centre of the breakdown in English football and the faster we remove him from it the better. Go away David.

Tony Mcguiness (Liverpool fan) says...

After watching England's poor display against France, the USA must really feel they can go to Wembley in May and comfortably beat England. The USA looked very good against Poland in Poland! England cannot afford to ignore the threat the USA pose. The Americans may not be true world class players but they play very well as a team. If the USA beat England at Wembley, I will hide on the beach here in San Diego because I won't be allowed to forget it....

Aaron Mcintosh says...

I am always fed up of hearing people question England's passion. I would say that is the last of our worries, our players are well renound for working hard and being gritty and determined, its the fact that we lack the technical ability that is causing our downfall, we try 2 play a slow paced game based on possession and we cannot keep the ball for long periods at a time and that is why we fail, we haven't got the killer pass of a Kaka or the quick feet of a Ronaldo that will unlock a defence in an instant and make the opposition think what the hell just happened there? I have mentioned this many times before and until we get grass roots sorted whereby we pick players who are technically gifted instead of getting rid of them in favour of a player who is physically very big for his age, give the skillful players a chance and we might well go somewhere.

Darius Katani (Celtic fan) says...

I actually thought the game was boring and quite baffled on the 'positives'. Dont quite think one shot on target is a positive. I cant really understand the whole owen has scored 2 goals, hes on form thing going on. Owen has never got anywhere near the kind of ability he had at liverpool and to be honest where it all went wrong was when moving to madrid. I also cant understand the whole craze over Beckham aswell! I mean england just got beat off of france but yet questions are being asked on how far can bechkam go and beckham this. The guy is playing in a puppet league and it is alright saying he wont change as a player but your only as good as the team around you, if the team is of poor quality its hard to play your best football. I think david bentley should start before bechkam, hes more attack minded and can actually run up and down a wing instead of running to just after the half way line and playing a pass 30 yards and stopping because secretly you know if you go any further you dont have the legs to run back down the wing and if were being honest it true.

Peter Piper says...

Stewart Downing, absoloutely awful, how can anyone justify this mans place in the team, a total no brainer whos only claim to fame is being able to kick (slightly) better with his left than right, hence making him a "world class english left winger". Nonsense Wallys like Andy Gray and Richard Keys keep spoon feeding us the same old tripe about how "World Class" our players are. The truth is they simply are not, they all look so uncomfortable on the ball it is embarassing Looks like much of the same in future

Steve Gee says...

England is not a major force in World football and will not be again for many years. If you took the present England team and plonked it in the Premier League it would finish around mid table. England is the Man City or West Ham of international football, not Man Utd, Chelsea or Arsenal. English players such as Rooney or Gerrard look good for their club sides because they have foreign players around them.
