rooney is not a world class player....i know what you want him to do but he just is not doing it, he is so overrated owen and rooney

Micheal owen is the problem with England, if he does not score he is having a bad game. He is not that technically gifted and that is why England have to play "long" football rather than on the ground. Rooney and ashton is a okay idea, however defoe scores a tonne of goals for the amount of minutes he gets and never gets a look in.

It is a JOKE when you look at the so called strikers that where picked to play against France. Lets take a look at them.
Peter Crouch---is not a first choice for his Club
Theo Walcott------ Ditto
Bent-----Ditto
Defoe----had to go to another club to become a regular
Owen-----is living in the past, look at the number of goals he has scored this season
Rooney---- is the only one who deserves to be playing--- but not as a lone striker
Bentley----is still learning the trade , and is definately NOT another Beckham at this time.
Unless England can find some real strikers then they will always be just another team, no matter who the manager is.

Yes i think there is a lack of strikers for englan at present hhowever i do feel rooney should play off michael owen. What about nurturing Theo Walcott. This is the ideal time to promote him

The fact of the matter is we have nobody who is suited to the lone striker role, so we need to find a system that works for us where we have at least 2 strikers. This would then open up oppurtunity for a variety of partnerships to be used, and allow the quality of Wayne Rooney to shine through with the support of another striker.

What about Agbonlahor and Walcott ? Or Rooney in the hole and Dean Ashton ? Owen and Johnson? France in Euro 2008 will play Anelka and Henry; Italy and Spain two up front also.
Rooney and Owen are still our best strike duo though, when they actually play together

what about Dean Ashton? He is becoming a forgotten man, seems he is just starting to regain his form at West Ham now as well! He could be the target man that we are lacking.

Sorry but Owen is passed it. He is only playing for England on past reputation. It's hopeless having Beckham back lofting long balls to Owen and Rooney - they're too small. Surely, apart from Crouch, there is someone else - someone with speed and physical stature.

Rooney ... would have been better staying at Everton for a few years and learning to work in a team ethic that has to work hard...
Are you nuts? No one works harder for the team than Wayne Rooney, have you never seen him back defending and tackling around his own box? That is where he suffers, because he is working too hard for the team. He is united's leading assist provider and I agree that he shouldn't be the lone striker, but a support striker for A N Other. England's problem is who that can be, with Crouch not playing regularly for Liverpool and everyone else under 6ft. Owen barely touched the ball last night and seemed to offer nothing to the team. Let's try Defoe, but again, will he be able to play that lone striker role? I think Capello may have to change his system to accomodate our lack of a quality traditional centre forward. 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 at most.

Rooney is a good number 10, not a good enough number 9 for England. He is a power player and a scorer of great goals, not a great goalscorer. this goes for both club and country. At United he is not prolific, he never has been and never would be their top goal scorer(with or without Ronaldo there). At club level he is patchy, padding his stats by scoring braces in certain games. Unless another England striker is in form, be it Owen, Bent, Defoe, the team will be in trouble if they are relying on Wayne Rooney to bang in the goals which is what they are doing.
Again, he is an absolutely brilliant player, a powerful player, a great creator, but when it comes to goalscoring, he is average at best.

England's problem full stop is scoring goals. Owen for me is past his sell by date and Wayne Rooney is not a consistant scorer for club or country. For me Peter Crouch has got to play every game.

Why is Rooney the automatic choice. He is over rated. He is not an out and out striker and goal poacher. Lacking in stature, and lacking that extra yard he is no Lineker. He is more of a assist to a striker, and chances obviously come easier at Man Utd against lesser opposition than at international level. Otherwise he is wasted. I think he has lost that knack of being a great for England, and would have been better staying at Everton for a few years and learning to work in a team ethic that has to work hard. I think he lost that when he went and since then he has scored a very very poor return for England. One of the worst for many England strikers. Anyone else would be dropped straight away. But because it is Rooney he never will.

Why does no-one consider Defoe when speaking about English strikers. I can understand when he wasn't playing reguarly for Tottenham but since he moved to Portsmouth he has been on fire, probably the most 'in form' of Englands strikers yet even Walcott was selected ahead of him.
I'm beginning to think there is some kind of conspiracy.
