Darren Wood (Norwich City fan) says...

Why is Gerrard in there??!! He had a very quiet season by his standards. Just going on reputation? Good shout with Michael Johnson though, rate him very highly. Tom Huddlstone should get a chance in the England team in the friendlies that are coming up.

Danny Ryan (Manchester City fan) says...

The team picks itself, but it would be nice to see a bit of imagination. If Micah Richards was playing right back for City, he'd walk it. He plays there for England, so I still think he warrants a place. Elano is a brave shout for flop, from how he started out, he did fade, but was only as guilty as the rest of his team mates with the excetion of Hart, Richards, Ball, Dunne and Vassel as far as effort goes, and effort delivers results. But Malouda, and Bent are big calls for flop, even Shevchenko who hasn't delivered at the second time of asking. Could we not broaden our horizons a little. Ashley Young? Santa Cruz, Bullard has virtually kept Fulham going. Outside the box please!

London Gooner (Arsenal fan) says...

How is Joe Cole even anywhere near the team of the season? Both Fabregas and Flamini wwere better performers than Gerrard who only seems to have to be mentioned in Liverpools squad to get man of the match. Nothing to do with the media constantly fawning over the most over rated player of our generation by any chance!

Ben Murray (Liverpool fan) says...

For the rising stars, i agree that Michael Johnson is one of the best rising stars, but, Manchester city goalkeeper Joe Hart has caught my eye, he is a fantastic goalkeeper and is not affraid of anything, with more experience he WILL BE the best goalkeeper in the world.

Trevor Alinf (Aston Villa fan) says...

Joe Cole? or Ashley Young? I believe Ashley has done more than enough to be on that team sheet and for close to £10m everyone thought Martin O'Neil was mad when he bought him.... now look at the performances he has put in this season. I also think it is testamount to Gareth Barry's season that clubs like Liverpool are after him and he has played himself into a regular England place.

Rob C (Manchester United fan) says...

Good team selection but, the selecton of the best but has to be Santa Cruz and even dare I say it Torres!!! Flop of the season has to be Bent all-be-it he doesn't pick the team. Malouda has been terrible and lets not forget apart from his goal in the Champions League Semi Final, Ryan Bable has also been terrible!!!!!!!

Tom Conder (Ipswich Town fan) says...

Bent can't be flop of the season because it's not his fault Robbie Keane and Berbatov were playing so well they couldn't be dropped. Malouda on the other hand was poor. Elano did well in enough games for him to surely be Man City's best buy this season? I agree with the team of the season apart from swap Gerrad for Essien and Joe Cole for Ashley Young. Cech was close for Goalie too.

Adam Theobald (Manchester City fan) says...

Elano has played 34, scored 8 with 8 assists - he cost half the price of bent and 5 million less than malouda who scored 2 in more games. Can't defend? He played right back against Pompey and was man of the match! Where can you justify giving him flop of the season?

Posted 11:37 13th May 2008

Simon S (Everton fan) says...

Joleon Lescott, 10 goals from defence and not even a mention!!! If he played for one of the big 4, im sure you would be raving about him.

Ben Redhead (Southampton fan) says...

Sorry... Joe Cole? Team of the year? No way, he's been awful all season. Hyped up at the end of last season as the answer to England's left sided problem and then completely buckled under expectation. Stewart Downing has been a far more consistant performer and a much worthier contender for best left sided midfielder. In fact, most teams in the Premiership have had better left wingers than Joe Cole this season...

Tariq P (Manchester United fan) says...

Why the dickens is Gerrard in the team of the season?? Essien should be in there, and I'd have a couple of Villa players in there too, maybe as the rising stars. Maybe Chris Kirkland should get a mention somewhere?! Also Elano biggest flop? As pointed out earlier - Malouda and Bent - much bigger flops...

Richard Ibberson (Manchester City fan) says...

Are you having a laugh with Elano being flop of the season. considering he's played out of position for most of the remaining games. Darren Bent, Malouda, even vorinin at liverpool has been a flop. once again journalist against City, would put money on the reporter being a united fan.

Aaron Mcintosh (Manchester United fan) says...

Have to agree with the City fans about Elano even though I am United fan. Admittedly he has had some poor performances in the middle part of the season but on the whole I think he has done well especially in his first season. As people have mentioned before, Malouda and Bent are bigger flops. I think this guy didn't pick Malouda because he had him as best buy at start of the season! he also funnily enough had Tuncay as the biggest flop, yet he is a class act, rate him very highly. I also cannot see how Woodgate gets best buy over Santa Cruz and Torres, those two have been immense and although Woodgate has done well, I don't think he merits being above those two.

Tom Sanderson (Manchester City fan) says...

elano- flop of the year? have you read any press in the last few months 'Real Elano is Back' he's been one of our best players...a model professional also playign at right back twice..for someone who 'no stamina and unable to defend' ...he even played well last match and scored a stormer...and remains our season long highest scorer. flop..eh..no. Malouda who cost at least £5 million more than elano has scored the incredible amount of 2...and struggles to get picked...flop i think so. darren bent the 16 million pound man....6 goals...brilliant for a striker...FLOP

Lee Durham (Arsenal fan) says...

Good Choice with Michael Johnson as up and coming, hopefully Capello will see how well he and Reo Coker have done for their clubs this year and give them a chance, playing these 2 in midfield for England would be a good compliment to each others game and would allow Rooney, Owen, Joe Cole and Walcott/Gerrard to concentrate on attacking and giving the opposition something to think about for a change, and would allow the Fullbacks of Ashley Cole and Micah Richards to attack the flanks more!

Jack Pilgrim (Blackburn Rovers fan) says...

Santa Cruz Not best buy?!! Are you havin a giraffe. Got to admit though it is a bit of a suprise that all the team of the season are in the top 4. Espescially Gerrard who is just in because he's Gerrard-yet more media bias to the top 4.

Posted 10:25 13th May 2008

Alex Hill (Liverpool fan) says...

Lewis - I couldn't agree more with your choice of goal of the season, pure skill and it got my vote on the Official Liverpool poll - shades of Pele...but a special mention for Adebayor's against Tottenham earlier in the season, stunning technique!

Posted 10:23 13th May 2008

James Tilley (Manchester City fan) says...

elano biggest flop!!!! you havin a laugh? the guy is a genius!!

Posted 09:49 13th May 2008

A Fan (Arsenal fan) says...

Finally someone points out Eduardo's horrific injury as the low point of the season.

Posted 09:34 13th May 2008

Tare Emakpore (Chelsea fan) says...

I think this has been the best team out of the rest picked, simply cus someone has recognised the magnificent season Patrice Evra has had. I would probably pick Essien in my team before any other Chelsea player, but Joe Cole has been better than good, although I'm sure that was a difficult choice to make...
