Learn to Lose: England cries into Thames as Russia raves over World Cup bid win.. They deserved it.. its in 2018 not next year so your argument of infrastructure is bogus coz they have a lot of experience of hosting big tournaments and they will deliver on time.. plus it came as a shock to me to know that in in USSR days they didnt get to host the WC.. thats just too strange that the biggest country in the world didn't get it EVER. Russian football talent has really started to come through and this can only be good for football as the game is strong in Western Europe with or without hosting WC's. WRT Qatar, it is money but it is also a region that is so important to Asian football and deserves to host a tournament. How will they pull this off? I have no idea but they do have the money. England were never the favourite except in British media, we always had an outside chance behind Spain/Portugal and Russia.

Politics is the key to organising any major sports in the world such as the world cup. It is why world leaders are always involved in the process. David Cameron Prime Ministerial job both national, international is proving a disaster. He has failed to host the world cup in this country. This is evidence that he is lightweight and inexperience. The British doubt him and the Con. party which is why he did not win the election. Labour has brought the Olympic Games to this country, Remember the politics Tony Blair and Labour played against French President Jacque Chirac before winning the Olympic Games. David Cameron and Con. party have failed to host the world cup. The media played a little part in the world cup misery, David Cameron and his politicians could have long played the Fifa cards much better than a small country like Qater before turning up in Zurich to make themselves fools and humiliate this country. I see this country towards ruin with their policies. Johnson

I agree with the sentiments of fellow Scot Ian Smith following the dubious decisions reached this week to allow Russia and Quatar to stage the next two World Cups. As a Scotland fan who has travelled to three World Cup Finals and all over Europe supporting my country I'm sure anyone with a sense of fair play would admit that England, United States and Australia have been hard done by, especially as FIFA have been naive enough to admit that all three bids were the best on show. Is it now the case that Blatter like Havalange before him is the autocratic boss of this outdated committee, with delegates being herded like sheep on his every command - looks like it! The guy seems to be on a crusade to take football to all corners of the planet, a Star Trek journey which ignores how much the established footballing nations have contributed to the game and to the coffers of FIFA over the years. Just read Ken Bates solution, with a suggested break-away of the powerful European nations from FIFA and I think it might just be the thing to make these less than honest people at FIFA come to their senses. It goes against the grain to say this, but if Scotland don't make it to Russia, and because of the way FIFA are now rigging the group seeding and play-offs we probably won't, then I sincerely hope that England make it to the final...and yes even win it and leave Blatter with egg on his face!!! Oh and bye the way I can't be accused of sour grapes!!!

Shut up Roy Keane!!!!! you have no right to talk about all this as you walked out on your country because they didnt have clean towels at your world cup hotel or something like that. As for FIFA, how the hell has it come to this that a bunch of forigneers can tell us how to run and where OUR game should be held? If it wasnt for us inventing this game (and a fair few others) most of the world would have nothing to do, and most europeans would be speaking German. The only bright spot is that at 74 Sepptic Blatter will hopefully be dead soon, and hopefully it will be a painful disease.

Really disappointed that the bid wasn't successful. It is no surprise that both successful nations are oil rich. FIFA have a legacy of corruption, and always look to the bidder which lines their pockets...no doubt Mr Blatter & Mr Walker will be happy in their opulent retirement. My only wish is that the British press now take on the challenge that has been laid down, and conduct a full investigation which will expose FIFA fo what it is.

The real question is - how was the result out on the internet 10 minutes after the scheduled time of the decision but 20 minutes before the idiot Blatter came on stage with his 'sealed envelope'. I watched on sky news and there were various sites showing not only that Russia had won but that England had been knocked out in the first round (something that no website could have guessed). In my opinion this was a window for somebodies buddies to position themselves in terms of their bets. Makes the cricket match fixing look like childs play. Disgusting (not that I care about hosting the tournament - just about the whole of world sport being bent).

I can understand the decision of Russia 2018, lamenting the missed opportunity for Spain&Portugal. Russia is a growing country, where football is more present every day. Incomprehensible 2022 decision, Quatar, uninhabited country, where European sports are just diversions from the petrol large fortunes owners: F1, MotoGP, etc, and now football. I would have choosen Australia.

The only problem with England bid was their press dared to peep into the nest of corruption called FIFA.FIFA and its affilitiates are the most corrupt and undemocratic institutions the world over.

Del Mac says...

Why should England have a devine right to win any bid? FIFA are quite right in bringing football to the people of the world remember Russia have never hosted the World Cup and rightly deserve their chance. Now the English bid was unsuccessful FIFA becomes corrupt would the same questions be asked if England were successful?

Gary Hearne says...

Yes the voting was corrupt but England as a nation must realize that they cant and don't have the right to win everything. The players that will represent England in that world cup will be better off that its in Russia as, as per usual the expectations of the english media and nation will be huge espicially if england was host. The expectations that is put on players is ridiculous and does not help them. Stop whinging over losing and just get on with it.

MONEY TALKS!!! Nothing in Qatar, No Football Heritage, No Stadiums, No fans, Well, they sound ideal to host a football tournament. Have to admit the Panorama programme and media has damaged our bid, but we wouldn't have won anyway, because the corruption was going on anyway and it's the money that bought both countries the World Cup. SOLD Everyone knows that the best atmosphere for Football is right here in England, Well we'll have to look forward to two World Cups that are probably as dull as the last one, last one watched by south africans who aren't interested in the game and know nothing about it, sat there making noises that sound like a swarm of bees.

Philip Beckwith (Liverpool fan) says...

it is bad enough that we have been lumbered with the olympics, we do not want the world cup aswell. it is obvious to me that the bid team did not want it either when they sent william, cameron and beckham as ambassadors. but to start crying foul play when they don't get the result that they claim they wanted, is just childish. scrap internationals, and consentrate on proper club football.

Bryan Le huray says...

This was never ever about the ability to host this competition, this was never ever going to be given to England, this was just about money. I wonder how much money was paid to each of the voting committee in bribes? enough to set them all up for life I expect, and as for that idiot Blatter, he knows nothing about football, thats obvious from the daft rules he endorses, goal line technology he refuses to entertain and the stupid comments he keeps making. Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely enough said.

When is the british media going to understand that no good is coming out of constantly breaking down your best footballers with negative coverage instead of actually trying to be positive. Always trying to expose your own players and breaking them down morally so they can't have only football on their mind.

Stuart Howitt says...

FIFA say the media had blown the chances of england getting the world cup, when will the english media learn, they always blow things out of proportion, And with this this leads to other countrys not liking them, they are englands worst enemy, not only in sport in general.......

Richard Collins says...

FIFA's reaction to the revelations in the English media is effectively a reprimand & therefore an admission of corruption. A non-corrupt organisation would want to know if any of its members were involved in any wrongdoing. Instead of investigating it's members, FIFA's response was to penalise the English bid. It should not matter if an accusation of corruption comes from a bidding nation or anywhere else, a truly fair organisation would be relieved that corruption had been discovered sooner rather than later. It has long been known that FIFA is corrupt, this is why they refuse to use camera technology - because it would prevent them from being able to fix matches. They have to be investigated!

England have hosted the WC - Russia have not. I think its only fair for other nations to be given a chance. Forget the silly "FIFA is corrupt" excuse thats coming from the media. England got only 2 votes and one of them was from their own representative. The bid was'nt good enough - end of!

Typical English comments "WE DESERVED IT" that is the only way we will get to the world cup finals, by hosting it, Russia have never hosted it I am chuffed to bits for them. Lets have a team we can be proud off first ,and we are light years away from that.Stop living in cloud cukoo land and face the facts, we are not good enough.
