I think this article is so magnificent you should explain it to Dennis Wise. I mean obviously it cant work with a director of football. if the players play bad that Wise brought in and costs the team valuable points, who's gonna get the blame. The manager! Its very illogical this and i hope we can solve it soon by Mike ashley selling the club to an foreign investor and we can get KK back.

What a very good article,i'm afraid that football nowadays is just about money and sport has disappeared, good luck to man city and mark hughes who is a good manager and a good guy but i fear that he won't be in a job for long there are only so many trophies to go round and i do't think it will be too far away that the premier league splits into a have and have nots league. The question is when the money men get fed up what happens to these fine clubs and worst of all their loyal supporters? I think its a case of"enjoy it now its later than you think"

Don't know what the Newcastle fans are worried about . They have been a poor football side for years now and it looks like it may continue for a few more.

That is one of the best article's I have ever seen on SkySports.com, it's better than the biased ramblings you get from Oliver Holt nad James Lawton in the tabloids. Analysis, humour, intelligent comment, this guy obviously knows his football in some depth, but it makes a good journalist to make it interesting to the reader, even none football people would enjoy this read. More please.

Another aspect which is emerging is that objectives of the new style club owners (profit, self-publicity) often donot correspond with those of the local fan base (league position, entertainment). Mike Ashley doesn't care if Newcastle finishes 5th or 15th in the League - but the fans do. Perhaps we're seeing the beginnings of a transformation in football which is marginalising the importance of the local fans - who needs them and their gate receipts/merchandising sales compared to the money in buying and selling players and buying and selling clubs?

I love this article. Its really a shame what football is becoming. Who wants to bet, mark hughes will lose his job, because there is no way city will break into the top 4 just by signing robinho. they need more than just one season to build the character and confidence the top 4 have and need to be champions. A manager needs to be in control and deal with the players he sees fit to be on the pitch so he can mould them into better players both physically and mentally. look at a player like darren fletcher. he is good, but he isnt even in the top 20 players in the league, but fergie has done such a good job with him and he has the confidence to call himself s champ and try to give his all for the team. he is the reason we have 4 points so far.thats the power of a manager in control. how can managers like keegan and jol and curbishley do that when they dont even know whose gonna be on the pitch next trainning session?

Your article perfectly describes how my club Hearts, has been ruled by dictatorship over the last 3 years. It has been well publicised in Scotland how the manager's choices are irrelevant and success comes at a price (just ask George Burley)! If Shane Gregory (below article) thinks that the Premiership is becoming a Circus, he can look no further than 130 miles North to see exactly how to put on a circus show .

Shane Gregory (Sunderland fan) says...

Although the premiership is now regarded as the biggest league in the world it is slowly turning into one big circus act. Mike Ashley being the ring leader of these clowns at the moment. I almost feel sorry for the poor Newcastle fans as there is only one direction there club is heading in. I am just glad that Roy Keane has been given the freedom of choice to manage Sunderland in his way and I am sure it will turn out for the best. As for the new Chelsea of the north (City) it's happy days at the moment if you're a city fan but what if Robinho doesn't live up to his inflated price tag? And what happens if the new investors go and buy the flashest players on earth come the january transfer window only to find another mid table finish come the end of the season? When Hughes asks for a solid holding midfielder and backline yet the board go and buy Ronaldo for 300million, it looks like conflict is just around the corner at Eastlands if Hughes doesn't deliver.

Terence Young says...

Not only the managers like Sir Alex and Wegner are dying breed, with players hopping around clubs like pubs on Fri night, we won't have club legends like Giggs anymore. It is a sad scene as I really like to see teams with their own icons.

James Jones (Portsmouth fan) says...

It's no surprise that Harry Redknapp is happy at Portsmouth. When Mandaric left Portsmouth, Sascha Gaydamak has done a remarkable job of staying low profile and backing Redknapp. Portsmouth will continue to grow from strength to strength because of this and if Gaydamak does decide to sell up, he'll sell to investors that will let Redknapp or whoever the manager is at that time do his job. Gaydamak deserves real credit. He's very amicable, he realised the books needed to be balanced this year, and he's done that without sacrificing the quality of the team.

Brilliant article...what a refreshing change!.You've read my very thoughts! Who can Dennis the Menace attract exactly??? Especially now? Let's not forget Newcastle was making a revival, and KK needed free reign if to once again emulate and challenge the top 4. The effectiveness of Technical Directors at other clubs seams irrelevant to the Newcastle scenario. It beggars belief that when Newcastle desperately needed players, and were screaming out for a left back, the directors set about auctioning the whole damn squad! Why ??? Was it communication break down between KK and Wise sat in London? Ashley cannot run football clubs like retail stores. Cost-leadership etc won't work on the likes of Owen's contract, nor does headcount obsession i.e making 1 player do the job of 3 etc. For the loyal fan whom won't boycott Ashley's cash cow, they should at very least boycott his stores and hit this wolf in sheep's clothing where it hurts!!!!

David Diaz (Newcastle United fan) says...

I fully back Keegan in his decision to resign. The illogical structure where the manager conducts an orchestra of musicians chosen by an exterior person is simply destined to fail. As far as Man City are concerned, I for one can't help to feel a certain disappointment. Long gone are the days where low profile managers took a low profile squad to the upper heights of football. Now, foreign investors buy football teams to have fun, at times (newcastle scenario) going against the tide of common sense. Finally, what if Fernando Torres decided to go to Man City?. What if the arab conglomerate get their hand on Fabregas? Football would be stripped of one of its most beautiful aspects: commitment to a club, loyalty for a team that is supposed to mean way more than a just a jersey.
