One of the very few plus points to take away from Headingley was the batting of Stuart Broad. His ability to score all around the wicket and particular his ability to hit the back of a length delivery either through mid off or mid wicket are of class that should see him batting atleast at No7 and certainly ahead of Flintoff. However, if I was selecting the squad for Edgbaston I would drop Broad from the squad altogether. Broad is in the squad primarily as a bowler and with a Test bowling average of nearly 50, has not proven himself to be a Test match wicket taker. If we had been going to Edgbaston one up or all square, I would have kept Broad as a decent enough 5th bowler able to score runs at No7. However, we are behind in the series and now need to pick 5 genuine wicket takers if we are to stand a chance of levelling the series.
With so many Saffer batsmen now in the runs, it will take a massive turnaround to knock them out of their comfort zone as they will be happy to sit on their 1-0 lead. Traditionally Edgbaston is not a ground for traditional spinners or swing bowlers. It usualy helps the hit the deck bowlers and those who can bowl reverse swing. Therefore we should pick a squad of 12 that includes Panesar, Flintoff, Anderson, Jones Sidebottom and Harmison. (with one being left out on the morning depending on conditions) Despite his efforts last Summer against India, this is tough on Tremlett but all these 6 are proven match winners with the ball.
Without Broad's runs at No8 and the inconsistency of our top 5, we need Prior in for Ambrose.
Regrettably, I don't expect to see Prior and Harmison recalled or if Sidebottom is fit Jones recalled either.

I can just see sidebottom coming back in. We have 5 good bowlers. It took monty nearly 500 balls to get a wicket from the lords test to this one. We need our top batsman to click. It was only a couple of innings ago we hit 500+

Vaughan has proved a passenger for some time now , so perhaps before we talk about Bell etc perhaps big questions should be asked about his inclusion. Pattinson was never ever in front of Jones or Harmison , what were the selectors thinking????? Is it time to give Foster a go again he is certainly doing it for Essex.Lets at least fight fire with fire on the bowling front, they dont seem all that keen when it 's quick, but it has to be accurate.

Poor preformance to say the least. The selectors really need to sort this out. Vaughan not preforming aswell as Ambrose. Well down to Broady. He is turning out to be a great cricketer
If your not preforming, you get dropped. Strauss and Colly got the end of this so why not Vaughan or Ambrose
Pattison, they heard Oz, and got excited

Yes really i really don't know what was the motive behind including 29 year old Darren Pattinson in the team he is not even an average bowler. I think english selectors are obsessed with broad he is much like indian irfan pathan neither complete bowler nor complete batsman. Good to see freedie back i think hoggard or harmison should be back. And no point in continuing with tim ambrose he should be replaced by some promising wicketkeeper.

Why are you even mentioning Flintoff or Ambrose in this article? They performed very well, it is the so-called specialist batsmen who continually fail to perform! Fred bowled over 40 overs in 2 days and still batted better than the Batsmen. If you want to look at faults here's a bunch for you, Broad playing injured, Vaughan not scorring, Strauss, Bell, and KP scorring inconsistently, selecting Pattinson as a fourth bowler? Collie should of been selected before Pattinson, his wicket to wicket bowling would of suited that pitch. Our problem is not the wicketkeeper or the all-rounder in the side or Anderson or Paesnar, it is the others who are suspect.

I haven't heard all of the commentary about the 2nd England v South Africa test but what I have heard is amazing.
What's absolutely amazing is that Michael Vaughan's place in the side hasn't been discussed. If he wasn't captain, he would surely have been dropped a long time ago. His role is as specialist batsman and in this he's been spectacularly unsuccessful. Why is he still captain and why is he still in the side?

For me Vaughn needs to open again, he is not a number three, pieterson is however and I wpuld like to see him there, I'm not convinced that strauss has worked on his weaknesses in technique enough, runs against NewZealand meant nothing, against an attack with teeth his flaws are shown. I think Ambrose is a quality keeper but he is not a number six batsman, we need batsmen who clearly back themselves and have self belief, give phil mustard a crack, anyone who Warne rates is good enough for me I've wanted to see him play for ages, a good aggressive batter at number 7 is what we need. As for the bowling Pattinson's selection infuriated me, we have simon Jones and Harmison getting wickets galore, get em in, at least they have pace and Simon jones can swing both the old and new ball! Whatever the conditions he can be dangerous. One last thing, broady, what a diamond, he showed our top order how it's done.

A disgrace to say the least, South africa didn't win the match England lost it. A few obvious problems ... Stuart Broad is more of a batsman then a bowler, Michael Vaughan shouldn't even be in the squad let alone captain, Tim ambrose has to be dropped along with strauss as they're both not doing their job. Simon Jones, Paul Collingwood, Paul Nixon and a decent top order batsman need to come in otherwise is going to be another hammering for England.
