Naming and shaming
Jeff Stelling says the 'hideous decision' to rebrand St James' Park raises plenty of issues...Back to story
Ben Duh (Newcastle United fan) says...
Well said Jeff! As long as that stadium stands, St James' Park will always be the home of Newcastle United. One of my first thoughts was the dread of hearing it named 'whatever' on Soccer Saturday.

Craig James (Newcastle United fan) says...
Total fuss about nothing. Big deal, its a change of name, football is a business. Get over it.

Jamin Wu (Newcastle United fan) says...
I think any sponsor who put their name on the stadium will be hated more than being loved.

Joe Henderson (Newcastle United fan) says...
Hope this one gets published for once! Totally agree with Jeff's view on the name change, the man is a voice for us football fans. It really is sad when terms like 'rebranding' and 'product' are spouted in relation to football and this fabulous football stadium, MA and DL are slowly sucking the life and soul from our club; do not be surprised to see the tacky Sports Direct logo on the front of our shirts next season when the Northern Rock deal ends. Another quick point, in November 2009 Derek Lambias (NUFC's MD) was asked if St James Park would always remain the official name of the ground, he replied: "Absolutely. In our reign, absolutely." Quite simply, the regime has lied to its most important commodity, the fans, since day one. Also, it is both reassuring and really quite significant that the majority of football fans, no matter what team they support, have ridiculed this decision, it really reaffirms my faith in football and football fans, so thanks for the support. I'm sure all other Geordies will agree with me on this matter too.

I think its brilliant. im a newcastle fan and always have been... we needed something new about our stadium because lets be honest, we've won nothing... i think mike ashley has made a wise choice.. well done mike.

Jonny Boii (Manchester United fan) says...
Even as a Man Utd fan I think this is an absolute discrace and a complete disregard to Toon fans everywhere! Its a big 2 fingers up to fans of the club, fans of football in general and especially the history this fantastic club has. Ashley should be ashamed of himself but he wont be, cos his pockets are getting bigger. NOT THE CLUBS POCKETS JUST HIS!!! The whole country knows the club wont see a penny, which everyone is used to by now. But money aside, changing the name of St. James Park is the final nail in the coffin! It seems to me that since he first took over Newcastle hes been trying to kill the club and hes now succeeded. Its a knife in the heart to us all, him doing this is unjustified and now the club as entity lies smashed and broken. You wonder how much more the loyal fans of Newcastle United of ST. JAMES PARK can take. He'll be changing the name of the team next, Mike Ashley's Sports Direct Money Bags United!!! Something has to be done to save this great club before its completely destroyed. A crying shame.

Jamie Nicholetti (Juventus fan) says...
I have got to say it is rather stupid after all this time they would change the name. However if he sticks to his word which I doubt which is to invest the money off sponsers into the team then it could be worth it.

if this ever happens to my Liverpool ill walk, shameful, feel sorry for Newcastle, when going so well then that dope goes and tries ruin all

This whole thing makes me sick to the stomach. How can Mike Ashley disrespect all of NUFC fans? More still how can all of his fans let him do it to them? It's high time we took action and sorted this out. As a collective, if we refuse to spend a penny at any store which takes the name then surely this will effect MA ability to sell its name. NUFC needs someone to stand up and lead this revolt and until the supporters mobolise we will continue to be abused and laughed at.

Brian Whitnall (West Ham United fan) says...
Are you all mental, Newcastle are moving forward as a club and this is a way of continuing the progression. Yes its a shame about the name, however would you rather your ground retain its name or challange for a spot in the champoins league?

Rob Hobson (Newcastle United fan) says...

Bob Burton (Newcastle United fan) says...
Ashley seperated the club from himself financially, which has left us in serious debt to Ashley - a debt payable on demand. All this nonsense about him clearing our debt is just that - nonsense. He's just shifted it across to himself. WE ARE STILL IN DEBT. City charged Etihad something like £200 million for their stadium, so I hope NUFC are demanding a huge chunk of the debt we owe him is removed for this cheap PR stunt? No, I doubt it. Strangely, whenever it suits him, the club is his to do with what he wants, yet when it comes to money owed, it has nothing to do with him. He bought the club, he bought the debt and should write it off, not keep holding us to ransom with it. NUFC need to charge him for this stunt and stop allowing him to walk all over us. If he wants to call St James' Park Sports Direct Arena, it should come at some financial cost to him - such as writing off the so-called debt he helped to establish. Just as things were going well, we should have known he'd do something else spiteful, and he's not let us down. What a clown.

Absolutely bloody Ridiculous! Do these money mad power rangers have NO CONCEPT OF HISTORY!!! I feel for the toon, been there many times and it will ALWAYS be St James' Exeter must be laughing thy're socks off! If God's own ground was ever to be renamed there would be blood spilt here!

Lee Everitt (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...
If the name does change, will you Newcastle fans be less passionate about you team? Will you stop singing your songs on match day? Will you stop wearing your black and white shirts on match day? All these things have made newcastle what it is today, not a name. In my view its the fans that hold the tradition. Ive had the pleasure of going to St James Park and it was fantastic! So imtimidating and loud! Loved it. I cant believe a change of name will stop that. On a seperate note, it will bring extra money but this is where I do agree with most NU fans. Where will the money go??? Obviously there are cost that we as fans do not see or know about but as quite a few of you have said wheres the 35mil from the carroll sale? It could be that you didnt get it all up front.. maybe you getting the majorty of it in installments I dunno. Back to my point. It shouldnt change the atmosphere of the ground. YOU ARE THE GROUND YOU HAVE MADE IT WHAT IT IS. By the way great start to the season!

Linda Bullows (Newcastle United fan) says...
Much respect Jeff, we will still call the ground St James' Park no matter what and the Newcastle City Council have condemned the decision and refused to alter any of the signs to the stadium or the metro station name so well done to them.Mike Ashley just sees the club as another way of lining his own pockets and giving him more publicity for his other more important (to him) business. Hope the media continue to call the stadium by it's true and historic name. You are right no self respecting company would touch the naming rights with a barge pole when they see how much grief Ashley is getting over this.

Jonny Shepherd (Bolton Wanderers fan) says...
Hey guys, just like to say this is an absolute shambles. Really does bring a tear to my eye thinking the beautiful, historic St. James's Park name has been abolished. Quite frankly I cried. I mean the Reebok Stadium for us Boltonian boys wasn't too bad because it was an new stadium and all. Mike lad, sort your self out, you pig...

I think that the descision to rename St James Park is stupid. It has been there namefor awhile and idont think that the fans like the new name. Also i think thatthe new name does not sound very good.

Paul Barfoot (Middlesbrough fan) says...
Mike Ashley is just slowly killing the spirit of Newcastle fans. Whenever he seems to do one thing right, he does two things wrong and this is just ridiculous. I can see a few more effigies being burned on Saturday.

David Holbrow (Newcastle United fan) says...
Jeff you are a legend mate, Mike Ashley is the tightest billionaire going, if you own a football club you should see it as a hobby and not a business therefore you should be spending money as you want the club to do well, Just as my beloved toon are doing well he goes and kicks us in the teeth again. re-naming st James is a joke and will only benefit mike cashley
