Anyone who knows anything about Glandular Fever will tell you that it will be at least a year for Federer to start playing anywhere near his best again, it's hidden inside and you cannot see any obvious signs that he's not well. He's currently just going through the motions to keep his eye in, of course he will lose his No. 1 spot to Djokovic who is a good player, but they aren't even in the same league...

I think that becuase of Federers "illness" we have seen a decline in his "form". I do however think that Djokovic is playing extremly well and has the potential to become No.1. But Nadal is ever increasing in wins so i think that if Federer manages to get back on form then Nadal and Djokovic will have to work ALOT harder..

i would agree that the federer reign is over, the emergence of destined great players like Djokovic and Nadal have halted his winning streak. I would conclude that federer in my opinion is the best player of all time, for now, his only slip up being that he hasn't won the french, only because he is competing against the best ever clay court player in Rafa Nadal.

Both Nadal and Djokovic have got as good as they are going to get. Federer can still improve. Although Federer played very badly at the Aussie Open he had his chance to beat Djokovic. Federer is still good enough to beat any other player. But he has to play at his best most of the time. I think the times of Fed winning when only play at 60-70 percent are in the past.

it is far too early to compare any tennis player with Federer. also, wait for him to retire, then we can sit down and analyse his achievements.
i am in my mid 40's. so i have seen alot of players come and go. personally, the most gifted player of all-time i have ever seen play is McEnroe. he was a magician with his racket. he was simply the most complete player in the last 25 years. he could play form the baseline and at the net too.
However, greatness is measured by the trophies you win in a tennis career. so, by my reckoning, Federer is on the way. but to be really regarded as a truly great player of all time (its all relative), then the FED EXPRESS HAS TO WIN the French Open.
if McEnroe had won the French Open in 1984 (after leading 4-2 in the 3rd set, leading 2 sets to love, serving at 40-15, only to blow it), then Fedrer would have been compared to him and not SAMPRAS. you must realise something, Sampras won alot of SLAMS because AGASSI had gone off the radar screen for over 2 years. Agassi was consistently beating him prior to his disappearance. Don't get me wrong, SAMPRAS was awesome and deserves all the accolades.
I think if FEDERER wins the French, then thats it, he is the greatest. but he is NOT the complete player. He doesn't have the volley game to use effectively / consistently. To be honest, i don't think there is a totally complete player out there.
TO RE-CAP on History;
McEnroe never won the French nor the Australian.
Borg never won the US Open
Samparas never won the French (did NOT even make it to a final)
Agassi won all four, but not enough of them
But do you know who has the best record for a single year, male or female?
Well, it has to be Steffi Graf. she won all 4 slams and an Olympic GOLD in..........1988
i don't think any male player will be capable of matching this record.....not in my lifetime anyway...!!

To say that Federer is past his prime is ridiculous. Just because he hasn't won anythin this year. We all know he is battling mononucleus, a virus which must be affecting his energy and game. kudos to Djokovic ,nadal, Tsonga, Baghdatis, Gasquet(who has a lovely backhand), and d chasing crew; However, once Federer recovers from his illness, he'll win more titles... I'm a Nadaal fan, but d emergence of Tsonga is great+ he's an explosiveathlete and fun to watch.

In my opinion, one counts Roger Federer out at their own peril! Although Djokovic is obviously a fantastic player, the fact remains that if Roger is at his best he is almost unbeatable even by Novak! Djokovic was beaten recently by Andy Roddick at the dubai open, and it wasn't as though Novak was playiing that badly. Although Novak is obviously a rising star with huge potential and a fantastic attitude I Think that Roger can never be counted out. He is after all, arguably the best player ever and once he's back in form i'm sure he will bring the house down. I think the only reason that people are saying things like this is because we are all so used to Roger winning everything and now we are slowly starting to realise that he is in fact human. It's great for the competitiveness of the sport though and i'm sure Wimbledon is going to be amazing this year!

I do not think Roger Federer's reign as the best in the world is over. Yes Djokovic is very impressive and so is Nadal but when Federer is on form I do not think that anyone can beat him. I think he will be the dominant man in tennis for at least another three years.

Djokovic still has alot to learn to even be classed in the same league as federer. federer is truly the best in the world and his record clearly speaks volume. recent illness has affected him but watch out for the magician, the world number one is going to be back in some style. BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD- ROGER FEDERER-MAGICIAN!

Federer was a real phenomenonal tennis superstar, but like everything dynamic in life, his reign is over. It is shocking, but it is the truth. The new (?) kids on the block are Nadal, Djokovic, Tsonga and Murray. Federer played some of the most sublime Tennis I have ever watched and the amazement was that he remained at that rarefied zone for years! Now, move over Roger, a new Emperor is here!

Certainly Federer is past his best and has already reached his pinnicle achievement of 5 Wimbeldons in a row. However I don't think he is quite finished yet.
Like Sampras had losses toward the end of his career Federer will be no different but they will only serve as putting the Icing on the cake.
I disagree with Lorenzo Leaner there is no way on earth Roger Frederer is overrated. The only reason he was allowed to dominate for 5 years against the likes of Andy Roddick, Nadal and Djokovic, when winning is because his tennis is truly phenomenal. It is just so beautiful to watch. He's been the No.1 ranked for the longest in history. Also won more Wimbeldon and US Open titles back to back than anyone.
Don't forget. Styles make matches. Serve volley against baseline has always made for good rivalry. Sampras was able to give him good competiion in recent exhibition matches but these were best of three sets not five. When they met in 2001 Wimbeldon Federer won the five set match.
Yes Feberer's best is behind him and Djockovic has been able to close the gap but when he's done I think he will go down as the best of all time in the open era. Bar none.

it will take a while for him to get his fitness and top form back but like all true champs he wil bounce back

consistency is what matters and lets see how far he goes

He has established himself as a contender. I am a big fan of Djokovic, but I feel players like Tsonga are getting stronger as well. I hope Mardy Fish has announced himself because it will definitely make tennis fun to watch. My predictions for this years top 5 - Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Tsonga, Bhagdatis - Fish has just emerged as my wildcard.

Roger Federer is still the best player in the world, but he is also way overrated. Who is/was his opposition in his era of dominance. Now Sampras, there is a great player. He won his titles while he had to contend with Agassi(who if it was not for Sampras probably would have won many more Grandslam tournaments), Edberg, Bekker, Ivanicivic (admittedly only on grass), Rafter, Courier and even Lendel and Mac in the beginning of his carreer. Need I say more. And he is still good enough to give Federer a better game than most coming out of retirement at age 36.

Djokovic is showing class and consistency, he will be a great player but has a number of slams to go to compete with Federer. Roger has an all round game which helps him on all services, his variety of shot and imagination keep him at superstar status. Sporting greats have a quality that keeps them one step ahead. Djokovic may not fear Federer but he has a way to go to topple him in play or reputation.
