To some extent you have to look outside the statistics and examine the humanity of the man. He clearly loved the game and was always on hand to shake the hand of those opponents who got the better of him and his team. I think he played the game in the spirit intended, to win but always aware that there are more important things in life. As a Packers fan who has known no other QB at the franchise, it will be difficult to imagine the post Favre Packers as they are incredibly big boots to fill. Eli Manning would be an incredible replacement, but in the spirit of Favre I feel the right thing to do is to identify a young gun and give them the support and the time to build their own reputation.

The NFL will never be the same. I've been a Packers fan since 1995 and Brett Favre is the reason I started watching the game. The critics out there will look at his interception record and say he's not one of the greats but when you consider all the good things he's done they far outweigh that one negative thing.
On top of all the main passing records he is the league's only three-time MVP and had the Patriots not set all those records then he would have become a four-time MVP at the age of 38.
His ability to turn blown plays into spectacular plays throughout his career is what I'll remember him for. As good as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are they are robotic-like and only succeed due to the strength of their offensive lines. Favre's ability to buy time either rolling out or just moving around in the pocket was exceptional.
Who can forget the pictues of Favre tackling his own players in the end zone, running down field after a pass or lifting up his team mates whenever they score. The guy just loved to play football and I for one am devestated that I'll never again get to see a bullet pass from the games greatest ever player.

Brett Favre, not in the top tier, are you real? The fact that No4 can still outplay most of the young guns out there at the moment and has virtually all the passing records proves he is one of the best of all time. You cannot say that Montana is better despite his greater number of SB rings. Joe played in an exceptional team with a great coach. Would the 49er's won any fewer rings if Favre had been their QB? Let's just be thankful that in an era where most teams are struggling at the position we had the chance to watch one of the greats, who with the possible exception of Payton Manning, is going to come anywhere near Bretts figures. Retire the shirt, reserve his HoF place and thanks Brett.

Best QB that there has ever been and a great character as well of the pitch.
But I think now either through a trade or the draft the Packers need to find a franchise quarterback to replace him.

It's not just the Packers that will miss Favre, I think the whole NFL will be worse off without a character like him. Thanks for the memories, Brett.

The numbers just dont lie. Favre has set countless NFL records and deserves to be ranked alongside any QB to ever play the game.
He may have thrown more interceptions than Marino, Montana etc but that was because he wasnt afraid to make mistakes, crucial for a QB. That is one of the best things about him and why he was so revered among all NFL lovers.
I'd certainly have him above Elway, and at least on a par with Marino, Montana, Namath or anybody else. As a big NFL fam, I'm just glad to see I saw an all time QB playing, in Brett Favre, just as I'm glad to see Brady and Manning play too. This current crop of NFL QBs rivals any in history and all 3 guys are probably top 5 all time.
Good luck Brett, you'll be missed

Brett Favre is not the best, but he is among them. I would put Joe Montana, John Elway and Johnny Unitas ahead of him.
McCormack, are you kidding me? Donald Driver is a top notch WR, Greg Jennings manages to get as many big plays as the topp WR's in the NFL, James Jones had a great rookie season, Koren Robinson is decent. And you come and say he retired because he had no one to throw to?
Good bye Brett, and thanks providing us great games and plays!

Sad to see Favre go and I agree with the last comment, Favre is in the top tier. He holds so many passing records and yeah he only won 1 Superbowl but so has Peyton Manning and he will be in the top tier. As for Tom Brady, top tier yes but he bottled it under pressure in the Superbowl. He might have won 3 but he went to pieces against the Giants. Favre is in the top tier of QB's without doubt.

Brian, you have to be kidding! Not the top tier!! He is the man who holds all records for quarterbacks and he has done it enjoying every second of the game he loves. The only 3- time MVP, a Superbowl, the game will be a sadder place next season without him. His enthusiasm was unbounded. I wish him all the best in his retirement, so long Number 4.

Do you guys watch American Football??? Reason he's not comin back is because he doesn't have a receiver to throw to next season. He wanted Pack to get Randy Moss but he just signed new 3 Year deal with Pats. Favre even said his decision would hinge on that, so you know how he feels about his receivers. As for him leading up the second tier, not a chance because he is up there in the first tier along with Marino as well, did you also forget Jonny Unitas???
Favre has also won so many games from behind and his "reckless" losses have mainly come in the last few years where he hasn't had a decent team around him and was just trying to make things happen.

What a shame to see Favre go, particularly after he did so well last year. Can't understand why he wouldn't want to return for one more crack at the Vince Lombardi trophy after going so close. The Packers certainly have the quality and depth to go deep into the play-offs.

Brett Favre has been a great ambassador for the game and on his day the best 'gunslinger' the NFL has ever seen. His longevity, his records and his streak of games make him a lock-in Hall of Famer. But he does not belong in the very top rank of passers. He only won one Super Bowl in 17 years and too often gave a game away by being too reckless. Montana, Young, Brady, Elway and then possibly Favre heading the second tier. But a great career and he deserves to enjoy a happy retirement.
