Billy Jones says...

Martyn C ... clearly YOU don't know your boxing. Joe is the best - modern day boxer - from the UK that's clear for all to see, but ... Jimmy Wilde is the best boxer from the UK of all time and always will be, even Joe Calzaghe would tell you that!!! All the boxing experts from around the world agree that Mr Wilde is in the top ten in the whole history of boxing. Learn YOUR boxing history Martyn before acting like you know it all.

David James says...

If Jones beats Calzaghe, it'll be interesting to see if Pavlik's people still want the fight? However, if Calzaghe wins, he'll be the hottest ticket in boxing and it'll be up to the Pavlik camp to come up with the right numbers to make any risk worthwhile. History though shows it might be too hard for Calzaghe to simply walk away from the top. I'm not sure who'd win. Calzaghe punches and moves, Pavlik is a fighter. Both can take a hit and come back to win. Calzaghe though is giving away a massive 10 years and would be 37 by the time they match up! And if Calzaghe's crime is taking on the unheralded and fighters past their prime, what then would victory over Lockett and Calzaghe at 37 really say about Pavlik? On their best days, Calzaghe surely wins. Actually, at his best, I think Nigel Benn would also beat Pavlik and if styles make fights, that would've been something! Calzaghe hasn't anything else to prove, so I hope he beats Jones and retires a true legend of World and British sport.

Andrew Grant says...

Personally I have little doubt that Calzaghe will beat Jones and he clearly is an excellent champion who has endured. I would however hesitate to laud him as the greatest british boxer ever. I tend to agree with Leon Watson that a good many of Calzaghe's defences have been against opponents with little chance and in a fair proportion of these fights Calzaghe looked distinctly average (e.g Ashira, Veit x 2, Salem). Fair enough he was awesome against Lacy and battled back well after a dreadful start against Kessler, however he was ponderous against a well over the top Hopkins. Taking on Pavlik would I believe be his toughest test against a man with youth on his side, more power than any of JC's previous opponents and (as Pavlik proved in his first fight against Taylor) a tremendous heart. I suspect that the differences would be a) Pavlik's relatively tender years and b) I don't think the yo-yoing in weight would do JC any favours. My prediction would be that Pavlik would outlast Joe and KO mid to late in the fight, however I wouldn't want to call it and i'd pay handsomely to see it. Calzaghe is one of the very best british fighters of modern times, however a bow out against Pavlik would surely be a much better way to cement a legacy than against a faded Jones Jr.

The fight between Calzaghe Jones has already been signed an sealed for New York! There will be moreof a chance of Pavlik Calzaghe been in Cardiff as Joe's swansong!

Martyn C says...

Paul Willock what are you talking about? I take it you don't watch much boxing, Joe is without doubt the best british boxer ever his record speaks for itself! Undefeated in 11 years and made over 20 title defences it's just a shame he wasn't around at the time when Collins Eubank and Benn were in there prime because he could out box them all. If he takes on Pavlik he will dance around him all night and win on points.

Neil Hollis says...

Lennox Lewis took on tyson when tyson was well past his prime and people still talk about that as one of Lewis's defineing fights. B'Hop was a no1 P4P when he was 40, so considering Calzaghe beat him when he was 42 is still a great acheivement. I think the B-Hop fight has put doubt in peoples minds about how good Calzaghe is and how he usually dominates fights. This was due to B-Hop's style. Calzaghe will dominate Jones from the beginning, and I think Pavilks style would really suit Calzaghe. Someone wrote above that Calzaghe has a questionable chin- do you actually watch boxing mate? Did you not see How easily Calzaghe recovered from hopkins Haymaker? and didi you not see how every connection Mikkel Kessler made didn't phase the guy one bit? He's got to have one of the most iron chins in the sport. He's no amir khan....

Simon Duff says...

Calzaghe would batter pavlik and his big laboured haymakers, it would b a jeff lacy part two once pavlik tired. Let him smash Pavlik, retire and let Froch take the crown n clean things up. If he dont fight Pavlik then wot he says about collins in his book applies 2 his self, only diff being Pavlik will also earn big money, far more than froch, then if he was to beat Froch we wud lose another unbeaten brit

This news is fantastic!!! If it is true that is...how many conflicting stories have there been just lately?? Im still optimistic that Jones Jr fight will be in Cardiff. If he does fight Pavlik then those doubters & pesimists will hopefully be silenced, as I dont think he ever was avoiding that bout! xx :o)

Andrew Moore says...

Carl Froch would K.O calzaghe.

Bilal Javed says...

Calzaghe V Pavlik.... EXCELLENT! Calzaghe would beat him and that would prove that calzaghe is the BEST! Calzaghe career has been criticised all the time by the press by saying his opponents are hand picked and latelt that he is fighting people who have passed their best or are old. So come on Calzaghe smash Pavlik up and prove the whole world wrong!

Danny Slater says...

I say he gives Carl Froch, a go, he is up 4 it, stop thinking about money and give somebody the chance you had against Eubank

Dave Bussey says...

Couldn't agree with you more Luke. I would like to see Calzaghe beat Jones and then have a final showdown with Pavlik in Cardiff so he can silence all of his critics and prove why he is the best pound for pound fighter in the World!

Posted 10:45 17th July 2008

Neil H says...

If he fights Pavlik and wins, then I really don't think anyone in their right mind could argue that he is not the greatest british boxer of all time. He would have beaten the best middleweight in the world (Pavlik), the best light-heavyweight in the world (hopkins), and dominated the super middle weight divison for 11 years.

Posted 10:43 17th July 2008

Paul Willock says...

Don't be silly Luke, he won't hammer him at all with those pitty patty slaps. I think he'll beat Pavlik by close decision if he steers clear of Kelly's lethal right hand. Joe has good speed and can adapt to fighters well, but he'll have to be extrmely careful with Pavlik...One left-right from him and it good expose Calzaghes questionable chin. All in all, I think Joe will take it on points, simply by landing more...Even though slaps wont do much damage, they'll still give him the fight. Oh and best British boxer of all time? You're having a laugh right?

Darren White says...

Calzaghe v Pavlik is the fight i want to see most now that Mayweather v Cotto is not going to happen. Calzaghe will beat a Roy Jones who is way way past his best. Calzaghe is a great fighter, no doubt about it but both Hopkins and Jones junior are past their best. A fight with a bang in form, in his prime Pavlik would be huge. If he beats Pavlik he really would show he is pound for pound one of the best.

Kenny Dow says...

forget pavlik i think joe has bit of more than he can chew against roy jones, hopkins showed joes weakness with straight rights and jones hits with much more power, i hate to say it but calzaghe will be retired in about round 8

Barrie Lee says...

Why fight Pavlick the ghost!! He doesn't need him to prove he is the best p4p fighter in the world! Look at the stats, Calzhaghe is the man and should retire after Jones and relax knowing he is! The reality is times change and there will always be another hot young prospect ready to beat up on an old great! Retire and be happy!

Sean Lincoln says...

The day Joe Calzaghe retires will be a sad day, i hope he stays around for aslong as he can and excite all his fans with his amazing speed and so called "slaps". Pavlik Vs Calzaghe would be a good fight, but Calzaghe would just be way too overwhelming. Calzaghe doesnt need to prove himself anymore, he IS the best and noone and say otherwise. Joe Calzaghe your the best.

Leon Watson says...

This, i suspect is Calzaghe attempting to establish against the new generation as there is a school of thought that his legacy will have been has been's and FORMER greats. I respect his achievements and think hes's a very good champion but lets face it, he should of fought b-hop 5 or 6 years ago, the same with Roy Jones, its a shame he never did get that fight with steve collins (due to collins health problems) years ago, i think collins would of stopped him comfortably. Eubank was past his best when he beat him so Other than Kessler and the VERY over-hyped Lacy my question is who are the GREAT fighters Caly has faced in there prime? Its not his fault - there hasn't been much out there since the mid 90's to be fair, in the last few years the really great fights have been in the lighter weights. Pavlik is a throw back fighter and is limited skill wise, Caly has his number there, however he has heart and can bang, so this could be dangerous, I think Kelly could knock him out if Caly has a bad night (rarely happens) but being the slick southpaw that he is Caly may just dance around him all night and take it on a decision. Either way its his attempt to get more PRESENTLY credible boxers on his resume.
