Chelsey Harrison says...

Why shouldnt Bentley play? he has been outstanding for Blackburn this season. Beckham hasnt played a competitive match in a matter of 6 months, he isnt match fit just yet. Oh yeah & Peter Campbell, technically he pulled out of under 21's; he did this due to fatigue, is a player who has played a full season in the premiership plus extra games in the cups, non-stop, not allowed time off to recover & spend much needed time with his family? you are really pathetic if you cant forgive him after that, it seems a lot of people already have, but if you choose not too then you're rather pathetic for not doing-so. Bentley is a very good player, with ambitions; like any other player, leave him alone, he deserves to play in the England squad, any English player who plays very well for club deserves to be in the England squad. "The subs at halftime played useless, bentley had an effect by playing more upfront; therefore the rest of the team started to move forward, creating oppurtunities" this came from a Setanta commentator, proves something doesnt it? Bentley should play the full 90 minutes next match for definite.

Mark Sturges says...

I agree that Bentley should start, and Beckham come on in the last 10 mins. Capello is surposed to be creating a "new England" and Beckham should be reduced to a squad player. Becks has done well for England but cannot just expect he is first choice now...

John E says...

I have no problem with Beckham starting as long as Bentley also starts. Beckham can deliver a ball but Bentley can as well plus he is technically magnificent and getting better all the time. As for those who say he turned his back on England - he withdrew from the U-21s to look after himself and this season has proved him right. It would be great for England if Bentley can stay fit and fantastic and look to be getting 100 caps himself in the future!! The 2 Bs for England for me!!

Adam Frazer says...

Bentley is currently England's most technically gifted player. He is the first English player for a while who does not rely on pace to beat a man, he uses his skill and quick feet, and can also deliver a quality ball at the end of it. He is the only player in the squad who can control the ball well with both feet and he is very confident. Beckham is an England legend and provides great delivery but his ability on the ball is limited and his time is up.

Chris Whitwell says...

I believe Beckham should start purely on merit, and not just because of stature. He was the only one who looked to be trying against Croatia other than Crouch. He has more fight in him and determination than most footballers around today.

Abraham Lincoln says...

Beckham has a lot to offer for England as no one can play his role in the England setup. He is the most gifted player England have ever produced. He deserved everything to retain his position in Capello's team, with his pasing and shooting ability leads England to a lot of success and can still deliver a lot as he is ready to sacrefise himself for England. Cone of Becks !!!!! Abraham Lincoln,London

Marcus Hammond ( blackburn fan) says...

Beckham deserves his 100th cap and no one can deny what he has done for England and I hope he gets cap 101 also and more. Bentley is the ideal replacement for Beckham and is a class act, I think they can both play in the same side but for sure Bentley is the future. Good Luck Becks!

Vicky Bailey says...

David Beckham has been a fantastic ambassador of English football and I beleive he is still one of the best players that England has. It would be a traversty of justice to deny him his 100th cap. And I think he should be capatain to boot!

Francois Lanaud says...

I'm still rather annoyed at Beckham's leaving to the MLS because had he stayed at Los Merengues, this discussion wouldn't be had. I say this because from the technical standpoint that is required of international football, he is no less able in an international context match than, say, Gerrard or Lampard. It's just the media expectations of Beckham that have followed him around and exaggerated his status as the 'Golden Boy' of English football, have, in keeping with tradition, also exaggerated his demise. He was never able to beat a man at speed but his essential attributes- crossing, passing, etc still correspond to the requirements of international football now, as they did 10-12 years ago, and for that reason, he deserves to be the permanent fixture of the right hand side.

Steven Quayle says...

How can you say Beckhams never been a great footballer? When he was at United he was one of the best players in the world...if he wasn't Madrid wouldn't have wanted him would they! And hes clearly not only playing in LA because hes not good enough seeing as Madrid where basicly on their knees begging him to say; oh and who was the manager when they where so desperate for him to stay...

Mark Lethbridge says...

I can't understand all the fuss about Beckham. Why pander to him just so he can get 100 caps? He, in my opinion, has never been a "great" footballer just gifted at free-kicks and passing the ball, definitely not a great footballer. I think most of the England team's "top" players are there through name rather than merit. Forget Beckham and move forward with the new names!

Gareth Price says...

Beckham should definitely start. He has mountains of experience which is invaluable and the one thing that he has that is lacking in many England players is pride and passion. He has always led by example and given the opportunity will do so again... and nobody in football delivers the ball like him. Leaving him out would be foolish

John Burrows says...

In my opinion Becks still should play for Engalnd! Think of the many times he has saved them! The many times he has put in a cross that leads to a goal, or a free-kick that turns into a goal! And how many years he has been an execllent servent to English football. He definitely deserves to win this 100th cap! Come on Capello, put him in the team!

Karl Flinter says...

What difference does it make? Thanks to the worse than useless Steve McClaren it's not like there's anything England have to play for is there?

Posted 17:11 23rd March 2008

Ed Chambers says...

Beckham still has a role to play for England, possibly not as a starter but he can come on in the second half of games to influence the play with his passing and free kick ability. He could still play at the highest level but he has chosen to play in America.

Posted 16:39 23rd March 2008

Peter Campbell says...

Bentley turned his back on England. He should not start until absolutely necessary

Posted 15:59 23rd March 2008

Bren keyes says...

Beckham is not good enough to play for england, come on why do you think he,s in LA enough said.
