Don't get me wrong - we have had a bad season what with one thing and another. And I am not going to get in to a big rant about how or why - it doesn't matter, the fact that it is a bad season is enough. It is made to look worse by the fact we finished second last year. However, a quick look at the history books shows us that the first time Man U finished 2nd under Ferguson, they finished 11th the following year... Plus it took Ferguson - who is clearly a great manager, what ever you think of him or Man U- 7 years to win his first title and looking back it would seem that the key to that was a certain Eric Cantona rather than any tactical genius. So I guess perhaps everyone who's out for Rafas blood should maybe look back a bit and see that it could be a lot worse and perhaps concentrate on supporting the team if they are Liverpool fans? Or is that just too much to ask? YNWA.

Haha that comment makes me laugh! Same old Liverpool fans, always talkIng about the past. I seem to remember your club causing this country the right to having NO clubs playing in the European cup. Liverpool have probably been quite lucky to have even played in the CL over the past few years and your best achievement in the league was last season, behind Manchester United- 2nd! It pains me to say it but Man City will be fourth & next season they'll make sure it'll be at least fourth. Livepool will be top 8 team, after all it's what you deserve for always giving it the big one before the season and firing blanks!! P.s you'll never walk alone is a song that doesn't belong to Liverpool, originally sang by many other teams but your supporters robbed it, typical scousers!!! LOVE UNITED!!

It's a sad thing to see but it looks like Liverpool may lose some big names. If I was Gerrard, Torres or Mascherano I'd be seriously concerned that my career may not provide a major trophy again before it ends. Benitez and his 20+ backroom staff would be too expensive to get rid of for the owners so that doesn't seem an option. With little or no funds for the 4-5 new players Torres and the like are talking about I fail to see where they can go forward. The only obvious option is for the sale of one or two of the big names to allow funds to strenghten the team. Liverpool have always been a TEAM in the past so maybe this wouldn't be such a bad thing. I watched the game on Sunday and was surprised by how uninterested Gerrard seemed to be, was this just me or did he just have a quiet day?

Ah Philp, ur talking rubbish. Fine Sir Alex took a while to get it done but the team he had wasnt too great. He had to change alot. Benitez got there and the gerrads, were there the carragers, some decent players. Fergie went from strength to strength at least, he had vison. Liverpool have no vision. Fine you can say no cash, or support from thier owners, but the manager there is also a fool. Alot of the players that he has brought in over the years have flopped. At least Manchester united have a future, and a good foundation. So for Mr. Shreeves to say 'Stuffed the famous liverbird' is completly right!

I would be so sorry to see Benitez loose his job at Liverpool as United are guaranteed at least three points a season from him. If he is kept for another season I would welcome a further three points making a respectable six points over the season because Liverpool are going no where. Many thanks to Gillett and Hicks for being so understanding and supporting ManU

What a load of rubbish Philip Battison ferguson has gone out and done what he has said he would, he has stopped liverpool from winning the league for nearly 20 years, when he took over from utd, utd had 7 league titles to there name liverpool 18 and now he has caught up to them, benitez and liverpool in the last 5 years have spent more money on player's than every other club in the premiership bar chelsea, as a utd fan i would love benitez to stay for at least another 10 years. Utd till i die
Posted 10:52 23rd March 2010
@ Philip Battison...sour grapes pal! name another manager who has stayed at a TOP club for longer the 20 years and Won over 20 MAJOR trophies?....im waiting...didnt think so! face the "FACTS"...your on your way down! no leaague title in 20 years!lol all you ave to look forward to each season is trying to win the battle over us...but you havent won the WAR...not for 20 YEARS... we will be the MOST succesful club in english history...enjoy the intertoto cup!! ha ha "stale champions league" i take it you enjoy europa league then,as its fresh full teams that cant be champions!
Posted 10:44 23rd March 2010
Well said Geoff,i totally agree with your comments. Liverpool are still living of past memories and most of there fans would agree.Rafa would be long gone if it wasnt for his clause in his contract but you still have those 'die hard' fans blameing the owners for there 'downfall' but have a look at the amount of money thats been available and spent £200-£300 million? Most teams in the Prem would love to have half of that amount! Liverpool are a spent force with players who dont look as if they wanna be there (Gerrard,Johnson then eventually Torres). Whats made the real difference this season is the likes of Man City,Tottenham and Villa have all caught up and Liverpool dont like it,get to grips with the fact that a top 4 spot isnt a gift and right ....you have to earn it.

I agree with Phillip Battison, it would be a big mistake to get rid of Rafa as he is doing a sterling job in battling for a Europa League place through the league. He may get lucky and not need it if he can manage another 'famous European night' for liverpool in the Plate Competition!! You cannot compare his reign to Fergies first few years as we were well off the pace when Fergie joined and he had very little money to spend. The team needed changing in order to be a success, which given time, he did and is still doing! Rafa on the other hand has won his only 2 trophies with what can be considered Houlliers team. Now he has assembled his team (having spent a fortune) he is worse off than when he started. That for me says more about Rafa than anything. A blind man could have known Torres was a quality player but a blind man would also have know Lucas, Dossena, Degan, Kronkamp, Barragan and many more were and never will be good enough for a mid table team like Liverpool!

Philip Battison says... 'Benitez's results and trophies won is far superior to Ferguson's in his first 5-6 years at Old Trafford.' Is that all you've got?? don't make me laugh! i think Liverpool as a club and squad was at quite a different level when Benitez inherited it compared to when Ferguson took over at Utd. You also say Fergie has been a failure because he's only won two Champs Leagues?? If thats the case then Wenger must be completey imcompetent as a manager and sacked by Arsenal immediately! Blind faith in Benitez.... long may it continue so we can all keep laughing!!

@Philip Battison.....maybe YNWA should be You`ll (Y) Never (N) Win (W) Again (A).....
Posted 10:28 23rd March 2010
Poor Philip seems to be rather fearful! Pretty ridiculous to try and say that Ferguson has been anything but a success and as if Benitez is fit to iron his shirt! Hiddink hasn't won the Champions League, Mourinho only once, Van Gaal not at all- so what point are you making? An extremely weak one! Liverpool are not going to finish fourth- this is going to be a disaster! This isn't like before when Everton did it, they didn't have the finances to kick on- Man City do as do Tottenham. They will have to sell Torres, who is clearly unhappy and frustrated anyway- what an immense player to be in the UEFA cup! When Liverpool slip up this season they will not be let back into the top four, it will be a long time before they pick themselves up from that. United got relegated? Yes great point that, not ancient history at all- different game then, like all Liverpool fans you can look back fondly because your club is not the force it once was, hasn't been for a long time- will it ever be again? Who knows...

"No money to build his squad" - That has got to be most hilarious thing I have heard. Just look at Rafa's 6 years and the number of feeble signings he has made, some £200million. And the only decent bit of business is Reina and Torres. You would never see Sir Alex pay £20million for Keane, only to send him back 6 months later. Two european Cups in 20 years does suggest the need to improve and they are going about it in the right way, winning titles and reaching finals. Liverpool were lucky they even got to the 2005 Champions League Final, how finishing the fourth best team in the land entitles entry to the European Cup is beyond me. Face it, Liverpool is in turmoil and it needs a change of direction. Their football doesn't speak volume to, their identity is unknown and thier manager clueless.

If Rafa truly loved LFC he would walk away without enforcing the full contractual payment and take his lovechildren Ngog Kuyt and Lucas with him as part payment I have been a LFC supporter all my life and it hurts to see a Rafa in charge- who in their right mind would play Lucas- he cant tackle , rarely makes a good pass and aimlessly runs around like a schoolkid!!! I was at the United v LFC game and he was pathetic... Bring in Jose.....
Posted 10:12 23rd March 2010
Yes but what your forgetting is that it was Gerrard Houiler's team that Rafa took to the Champions League final. Now it's his own team, what have they won?
Posted 10:10 23rd March 2010
Philip Battison dont make me laugh - Benitez no money to spend ? He has probably been one of the biggest spenders in the division. And dont give me the he has raised all the money he has spent line - what like buy players for millions and sell them on at a fraction of what he payed. Was he not given £20m to sign Mascherano in January 2009 and a further £40m to sign Johnson and Aquilaini in the summer. And I suggest you get your facts right - after 5-6 years at Man U Ferguson had won the FA Cup and the League so Benitez' lucky CL win and equally lucky FA Cup win (both acually drawn and won on the lottery of penalty kicks) are hardly far superior. You are the steriotypical red who believes you lot have a divine right to be succesful. Blame the yanks if you want, Liverpools problem is that they have a negative manager who has not got a clue regarding english football. Get used to being distinctly average - you are just one of the 'other' teams now, its as simple as that.

'Stuffed the famous liverbird' - don't make me laugh. Has no-one noticed that it has taken SAF over twenty years to win two european cups? At Europe's premier clubs - Real Madrid, AC Milan and Liverpool - (all ironically out of the stale champions league) he would have been sacked years ago for that level of failure. The likes of Capello, Hiddink, Mourinho, Van Gaal and yes Benitez, have succeeded in different countries, languages, cultures. So Liverpool have had a bad season. Big deal. I seem to remember Man Utd being relegated some five years after being European Champions. Benitez's results and trophies won is far superior to Ferguson's in his first 5-6 years at Old Trafford. Don't get me wrong, i wouldn't blame Rafa if he CHOOSES to leave - no money to build his squad, no support from the owners etc - but if Liverpool remove him, it will be a big mistake. YNWA
